PROSPERO

PROSPERO

A Poem by Evan Clark
"

A song.

"

Left standing on the mountaintop

He observes the world below

His shadow covers up the sun

And hides the land in snow

He watches for the distant ships

And he turns them back each time

Like cancer eating at his bones

Is the world outside his mind

We'll find a way to wake him

Someday

We'll find the key to all these

Locks behind his eyes

The man in the puzzle

Proud and fragile

Overpowered by these illusions

Another exile

Lost in the shadow

Of yesterday's decisions

And now the walls are closing in

He hears the marching feet

Of soldiers coming up the shore

And through the empty streets

He hides from all the voices

Of the children walking past

He still can't recognize

The man reflected in the glass

We'll find a way to reach him

In the end

Another Prospero addicted

To playing God in his head

The man in the puzzle

Proud and fragile

Overpowered by these illusions

Another exile

Lost in the shadow

Of yesterday's decisions

We'll find the answers to his

Oh so many questions

Until then the world is

Just another thing he's dreaming

The man in the puzzle

Proud and fragile

Overpowered by these illusions

Another exile

Lost in the shadow

Of yesterday's decisions

The man in the puzzle

With all the pieces

Scattered to the four winds

Will wake tomorrow

With the memory

Of how to begin again

Author's Note

Evan Clark
Another song, with a bit of back-story. It was inspired by a homeless man I encountered, with a knack for Shakespeare. A veteran, unable to keep from trembling even when he stood still, he turned down a handful of change in return for one cigarette, and proceeded to recite Prospero's soliloquy from the Tempest. This song is for that man, and may he find warm places to sleep.
