What ThenA Poem by VertoAtrumAbout somebody.Where will you be in 10 years, Will you have a ring on your finger, A bargain with a cheap bronze band, That clasps your small and fragile hand
Will you have had children by then, A pretty girl who looks like you, A feisty boy who sounds like him, Tearing harmony limb from limb
What if he leaves? or if he dares, To lay one finger on you, bruises, scars, And you have nowhere to run, to hide, Crying to the sheets, heart broken bride
Have you seen the words I've written, A poet's heart is truthful and strong, As I would be if I had such privilege, To be your knight would find me gifted
I'd walk from the sunset to sunrise, With you by my side, the world is ours, Whether foreign stars would leave us blind, Or if a home of ours would better shine
How will you chose to gaze upon me, A simple friend with saddened eyes, Standing, quiet, in the shadowed hall, Encumbered with his grief, he falls
Will you remember that fleeting kiss, Spinning, twirling, smiling, free, How you held tight my cheek and wrist, Questions, judgments, all dismissed
Can you forget us, up so high, Head on shoulder, so alive to you, How deeply warm our hearts would beat, A paradise where only we'd retreat
But what of that? was it all a lie, Meaning nothing more than silly dreams, Does my cold heart grieve for nothing, All hopes of being yours are crushing
And so I'll leave, and not look back, There I was first, yet now I'm last, But then again, I've often faced, Always being second place
