Dialogue Overheard in the Beyond

Dialogue Overheard in the Beyond

A Story by Essie W

It was nice.

So very nice, very respectful.

A lot of people here.

He knew a lot of people.

What about the son?

What about him?

Did you see thim?

I’ve never seen him. He never talked about him. I don’t even know the son’s name.

The one time I heard him say anything about him he called him Junior.

Well that is probably what was going on then.

You going to the house after this?

No, Lorna needs me, she can’t be left alone too long. You?

I’ve got a casserole to drop off, but not going to stay too long.

You going to Marty’s on Tuesday?

No, he was a great guy but I had a thing with his sister long ago so I don’t think the family wants to see my face.

Now I really am the opposite, I like the sister but I didn’t get on too well with Marty.

I agree the sister is a great gal. It’s more that they won’t want to see me than I don’t want to see them.

Gotta be respectful I guess.

These are for the family more than anything anyway.

Do you think there will be very many people at ours?

I don’t know if there will be anyone left.

Excellent. An entire small tale told through dialogue--many can't do that. The mention of the casserole made me suspect what was going on. A solemn occasion, these funerals.
