I still remember you (Love poem #6)

I still remember you (Love poem #6)

A Poem by Ern M. Yoshimoto
"

just a low effort love poem

"

I still remember you
 although our time was brief.

That summer of twenty-twenty-two
then you snuck away like a thief.

You could see
 only half of me,
the other half I kept concealed.

Broken parts,
 a string of hearts,
  and places that haven’t healed.

I’ve seen you unclothed
 I’ve seen you unloved
I’ve seen you dancing in the street.

What if I could hold you now?
 What if, what if, somehow;
  What if we never meet?

I suppose you have forgotten me,
 that’s probably for the best.
Just a shadow of a memory
 lodged somewhere inside your chest.

Many of us tend to linger in the “What if’s” believing the other, simply moved on. This poem portrays this exceptionally. Excellent work as always.

thank you Lisa. Happy new year, hope you had a good holidays
I like it a lot. The words are clear and meaningful. "What if we never meet" got my attention, and I wondered if it was real. It seems it was, or maybe I just wish it was. Irregardless, there's authenticity in words that feel familiar. Many of us must wonder about old flames and visualize how relations with them might have gone on. Very nice work. One of my favorites from you.

Ern,
It is a funny thing about love poems... they rarely seem to have a happy ending. I wonder why that is. Maybe a happy love leaves nothing to writhe about.

Sometimes it's the ones that are over before they fully start that resonate so much I'm memory.
What stops us opening up to some and not others is one of those questions we can only ask when it is over and we can be honest with our self at least.
The strangest reason I ever had was that I didn't like her jacket, that she obviously loved.
To me it looked like a charity shop purchase and would have better suited her in her sixties, but I'm sure I wouldn't want to hear their reasons spoken out loud either, so I just play mind games with those and end up calling it a score draw so each feels like we at least got a point each from it.
As you end with, probably not knowing is for the best, because no ones as perfect as they think.... not even moi!

there aint no cure for love!
I think the relationships that are brief but produce intense feelings produce some of the most longing memories. Especially where we hadn’t reached the stage of fully sharing ourselves but hoped we might at some point. Love poetry is so often about loss, unrequited longing, or that space where love is new and full of uncertainty/electricity.

For me, this poem embodies that space. The speaker wondering about the “if only” thoughts that cycle through after losing a connection. And then going through the varied emotions that accompany a split where closure is challenging.

There is safety in only sharing the parts of ourselves that feel invulnerable, but there is risk to that as well, I suppose. I think less people forget us than we imagine. Connections are memorable. Sometimes the other person is just as vulnerable as we are and simply chooses self-protection.

You described this poem as light but it feels honest and universal. I think most people will remember a love like this. Hope you’re faring well there, Ern.

Although this poem is obviously a love poem on the surface and one that can be taken as sensual, and even sexual in nature, it also may be taken in metaphor for any relationship where deep feelings are involved. We all stand naked when we bear ourselves in trust to another person. very nicely done.
