Falling SlowlyA Poem by Erin WinterAll is so beautiful, so permanent, so lasting... Until it fades away and one thing remains.
Blazing summer
Turns to chipper fall. And all come to dance At the prince's ball. Spinning dresses, Swirling, whirling. Men twirling with their partners As I stand alone. The wind rustles the eaves, Sending the leaves Scurrying from branch's tenuous hold, To dance in the wind During their brief plummet to earth. Falling slowly All around me Until they finally Stop. The partners are fading, The music playing As though Nothing is wrong. The color bleaches from them, But some Stay. Until the heavens Open up And let the rain Pour out. They seek shelter, But still I stay Alone. As the sunlight hits the rain. I am drenched, And it still continues to rain, The tiny droplets Falling slowly All around me Like tiny crystal Drops. I move to the center Of the dance floor, That solitary marble slab, Alone in the garden, Swept by a coating of Leaves. I turn around. I am no longer alone. Then I realize, I never was. The man walks up to me, Bows deeply, courteously, And holds out His hand. Once rejected Slapped away, Despised. Now the scarred hand, My greatest prize. Cautiously, I take His hand, And the music once more starts to Play. The rain is pouring, Drenching us From head to toe. Then it stills, Almost frozen in time, The silvery sheeting rain Falling slowly All around us Until it finally stops. And He does not let go. Somehow, I know He will never let go And I Am Finally Home. © 2014 Erin WinterAuthor's Note
