City

City

A Poem by Erin Leigh
"

Thoughts on a friend

"

Your charm and wit shroud you

In a false cloak of mist and stars

To hide the ice that burns, and the vanishing light.

Your words waft like the alluring scent of fragrant, melting wax

To conceal the thick smoke of burning flesh

Diffusing your truth with chemicals.

"

(Your chemicals)

Veil the smoldering sun

That once resided in the sky of your consciousness.

"

(Your poison)

Smothers your will and drowns your heart

In the blood of your own creation.

"

The city you’ve raised,

This utopia of bliss,

Annihilates the ebullient treasures of your birth

With apathy

And denial.

"

Your streets are plagued by melancholy

Like banshees, the strays howl songs of despair

Vibrations of madness echo off the grim alleyways.

"

Bleak, suffocating, infuriating,

Hopeless.

Your city is a model of hell.

"

Take it back,

and meet me in the world of the living.
