No LongerA Poem by Erin AustenSometimes we change, but we never know which way it will take us.Words are passed between us Coming and going like nothing has changed I told you I loved you You said it back. It's been years since we met Age no longer matters to us I met you as a girl barely blooming You met me as growing teenage boy. Adults don't care about trivial things Our ages are insignificant We no longer recognize the gap between us. I didn't wait long enough to tell you, I told you too soon And you rejected me too soon. "In a perfect world," you said. "I know," I replied. Now we're adults, No longer a girl No longer a boy. We're adults, we say. Adults are great at lying Because I lie to you every time we talk, Every time you tell me about your plans, Every time I ask you what's new. I lie to you. I still wonder what it would be like, But I know that it won't happen. I can't happen. My feelings changed Your feelings changed. Over. Done. New. Different. Am I feeling something new or different for you?
