PrologueA Chapter by ErinAlex
The wind howled. Inside the nursery, a light brown brindle haired woman layed in her bed with her only baby laying at her stomach. He was a little boy baby, and his hair was hidden in the curve of her stomach. A large dark brown haired man glared at his wife and baby. "He's too small." He sneered. The woman stared back. "No, he is perfect, as perfect as any of my babies!" The man narrowed his eyes and the woman's eyes widened. "NO! You are NOT going to throw him into the lake to follow his siblings! Let him live, let me have at least ONE surviving baby!" The man snorted. "He is weak, he must die."
"NO!" The man dodged foward and grabbed his son. He then started stalking into the forest. The mother hobbled after him. She jumped on him, but he easily threw her away into a bed of ferns. She limped after him, her pace slow but detirmined. Rain poured. He stood on the dock, the baby dangling over the flooded lake waters. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dull green eyes stared from a patch of bushes. They where full of hatred and regret. Why had she let this happen yet again? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The brown haired woman reached up at the man and her baby. The man glanced back at her and dropped the baby. She ran up beside him. "No," she whispered. She turned and glared at her husband. "We are done! I should never have seen anything in you, you are just a piece of fox-dung!" He growled. "Let it go, you are my wife." "Not anymore!" He stared, astonished. "Don't be so surprised, you knew this was coming!" He sneered. She was about to give him a sharp come back, when a tiny head bobbed on the surface of the lake just a few feet away. She jumped in to rescue her baby. The man shrugged and stalked toward camp. He met the woman with dull green eyes. "You are a horrible person!" She shrieked. His eyes widened. "You wouldn't..." he stammered. She grabbed her spear. "Try me!" He glared, then started running away, toward Thundertribe territory. The green-eyed woman ran and stared of the edge of the lake. "Brindle!" She yelled. A brindle head broke the surface. "Brindle!" She helped the mother and her baby onto land. She stood for a moment, just watching Brindle. Brindle turned to the green eyed woman. The rain dwindled to a miserable drizzle. "Tawny," She choked. A tear welled in her eye and a weak smile crossed her face as she heard her name. "Yes Brindle?" she whispered. Brindle sighed. "I want you to take my baby. Teach him to love, to fight, to care. Teach him, teach him all you know." she wheezed. Tawny nodded. "Brindle, I would do anything for you." Brindle's dull amber eyes gleamed lightly, and then dulled again. "I know old friend, I know." She announced in a barley audible whisper. The tear made its way down Tawny's cheek. Brindle kissed her baby, then layed her head down. Her body trembled, and let out a sigh as she breathed her last breath. The tear dropped onto Brindle's hair, followed by more. "Brindle, I will never forget you. You where the light to my day. You taught me to have fun, and look at the postive side of things. I will never forget you, you where better than any one and would have been a great mother." The rain poured again, and Tawny wailed her grief. © 2012 ErinAlex |
