Chapter 4

I walked into the living room with a coke and lays. I plopped down on the couch as the front door slammed. My mom and stepdad came in arguing like usual. I stood up and walked outside. I pulled out my cell and dialed Jack’s number. Of course I get his voicemail. Next I dialed Dana and Elizabeth’s numbers; neither answered. I was left with no one to call so I called a number I knew all too well.

“Ally”, a questioning voice came on the voice.

“Um yea hey Courtney”, I said hesitantly. “Are you doing anything right now?”

“No not really”, Courtney returned.

“Do you mind if I come hang out”, I asked slowly.

“Not at all”, she replied. For some reason, I could tell she was smiling. Fifteen minutes later I was in front of Court’s front door. I knocked and waited, with butterflies in my stomach.

When I stood in front of Courtney’s door I was suddenly transported back to that little teenage girl with glasses and braces standing in front of her best friend’s door. I still remember how Courtney and I made a vow one day when I came over that we’d be best friends forever. One week later, our ten year friendship ended.

“Well, Ally O’Malley”, said Courtney’s mom, Jane. “What a nice surprise.”

“Um. Yeah is Cour-“, I started, shifting awkwardly on my feet.

“I’m coming Ally”, I could hear Courtney running down the stairs and coming up behind her mom. “Hey.”

“Hey Courtney”, I mumbled.

“So do you want to go hang in my room?”

“Sure”, I answered hesitantly. We walked to Court’s room and I noticed that her room hasn’t changed. It was still the pink color that it was in elementary school. “Sorry to bother you Courtney” I started, “I just need to get away and you were the only one who answered.”

“No Ally don’t apologize. I miss you being here.” She said looking down and then at me. “I miss us hanging out.”  I stared at her like she was a monster with two heads.

Two hours later, Courtney and I had gone through two bags of chips, five magazines, and one movie. I stood up ready to leave and Courtney stood up as well.

“Well I should get going”, I said.

“Okay”, Courtney said, hugging me. She caught me by surprise so by instinct I hugged her back. She laughed at my shyness.
