GreenA Poem by Ben CampbellGreen
You leave the house the work the worries leave behind the stress that is life. You take a walk. Where you're going how long you'll be gone you don't know. You don't care. You just walk. You left your shoes by the door. You don't need them. You wouldn't feel the grass between your toes. You wouldn't feel the green. A good feeling. You walk by the houses you wonder, What are their worries? Their trials Their triumphs. You wonder What are they doing? Working Crying Laughing Loving? You wonder Have they walked today? Would they, you wonder Walk with me? Would they feel the grass between their toes? Or would they speak, and drown the sound of the green? Such a sweet sound. You watch the cars driving by. Some wave. You wave back. Some smile some frown. But none ignore you. They remind you You are here you are real. You have a purpose. But not now. Now, you walk. You wonder at the cars. Some you know. Some you don't. Are they going? Or are they coming? Why? Another goes by the driver an old man a stranger. He smiles you smile. He waves you wave. He drives on. The car was green. A beautiful color. You walk You wonder Why? Why life is Why magic isn't. As if in answer A girl approaches. She rides a bike leading a dog. A big black dog running beside her. The happiest dog you've ever seen. She wears no helmet her hair long and brown streams behind her in the wind. She whisks past you the dog barks. The helmetless rider the shoeless walker. You look over your shoulder. She looks over hers. You wave she smiles She turns back and rides out of view out of your life. out of your world. You stand still a moment and walk on. She wore green. Your favorite color. © 2012 Ben Campbell |
