Hell’s BellsA Chapter by Stephen CaldwellChapter 125: Hell’s Bells
Like an apparition they all were sent to a church-like courtyard where they only saw darkness and dismal empty streets. They were paved with mud and ground and had no affirmative directions, just one way out and one way back. The air was musky and dirty and had no light coming from anywhere but seemingly the road was lit up. Trevor started moving after that. He looked over at the church and suddenly the bell started ringing. It was about fifty feet high and had a stained glass window covered with blackness. The windows were all dark as well and the tower filled about the length of the steeple. The chapel glew fiercly like there were streetlights over it but there were none around. At that moment the road started filling with people from out of the darkness where they didn’t vanish but lined up to go to the where they were standing. He stopped and waited but all they did was continue to walk their way to them and turned at the church. The people looked normal enough, but didn’t have balls in their eyes. Just whites, just like that guy that was in the cell in the other part of hell. They filed one by one into the church doors that opened apparently all by themselves. It didn’t take much to gather that they were going in for a service. But maybe not, Trevor didn’t know what to think. He began moving down the street in between the endless rows of people that didn’t seem to be able to see them. He went on and on until finally, there was a stretch of town area that had buildings other than impending darkness. “What do we do now?” “We’re looking for Belial’s residence.” “Where are we gonna find that?” “I have no idea.” They kept walking through the eerie streets of Hell’s domain. It didn’t take long for them to reach a crossroads. “Where should we go?” Alex asked. “I don’t know. Let’s keep going straight.” They kept on, past a bushel of trees and there was one house on the corner. The title stone next to the road said Belial’s Mansion. They were here. Thank goodness. “This is the place.” he said. “That was easy. What do you think is in there?” “Whatever it is, I’m not ready to face it. But, here we go.” They walked up the cobblestone drive and made it to the front door. There was nothing else there. Trevor went up to the knob and tried to turn it. It was locked. “Damn it.” He couldn’t get in. The three story mansion with white window frames lining the tops of the floors, over-hanged him on the doorstep and he was at a stand-still. The four of them were right outside where Brittany was being kept and he couldn’t do anything about it. “How’re we going to get in?” “Have you tried knocking?” Alex offered. “Are you kidding me? Do want them to know we’re here?” “Who are “Them?”” Alan asked. “His demon buddies I guess. Have you seen the size of this place?” “Yep. I can see it.” “Where would we find her?” “You’re really set on finding her.” David said. Trevor and Alex shot him glances. “I guess we’ll have to bust the lock.” Alan said. “But how?” “Let me have a crack at it.” He pointed his finger to the knob and a red beam came out, melting the lock down into goop. Trevor was amazed as he pushed the door open and looked in. It was long hallways all around. A string of them led from the foyer to the other side of the house. “Alright we’re looking for a stone chamber. Probably somewhere in the basement. If you find downward stairs let me know.” “Roger.” The three of them said in unison. Trevor found himself at the end of the first hallway, a wide-window lining the back. It was dark out there too. To his right he saw a door, he opened it. An upward staircase, he’d stay down here. Wouldn’t want to disturb any of the guests hiding amongst this place. He looked to the left and to the right. More hallways than seemed possible. The way they went obviously made the place impossible to navigate. Going to the left, he didn’t want to run into any of the rooms. Lest he get an angry demon awoken. He reached the end of the hallway and searched to his left. No one was there. He went that way. Trevor was beginning to feel anxious in this enclosed hallway. He checked the room next to him about halfway down. Empty. Making it to the end of this one, he looked left and saw Alex and David standing back by the foyer. “Where’s Alan?” he asked when he made it up there. “He’s checking the right side of the house.” “I found it!” They heard him yell. They all ran down the right corridor and got to where Alan was. The door held steps of stone into walls made of stone. “This has to be the place.” © 2016 Stephen Caldwell |
