Chapter 113: Karen’s Laymans

The party ended up with not much to show. The three left the rest of the guests hanging in the kitchen and they were still blaring music drunk and having fun. Trev was having fun if only for a second. He’d had a soda and a few cigarettes and watched more of Bobby’s game on the TV screen. It didn’t matter that he wasn’t drunk, the rest were more conscientious than one would think. As they pulled out, David’s engine roaring and Trevor sitting there shaking, Jamie getting control of his car as he moved out from the lot over a bump, he receded from the stop sign as that’s how David’s truck engine worked. Trevor took a photograph of the section of apartments where they were at.

Though it seemed illogical, he though to remember where they were was the same kind of milestone that he would come to confide in. “We’re not going home.” Trevor said. “What?”

“I said were not going home. We’re going somewhere else.”

“Why?”

“Because I need to speak to someone.”

“Who could you possibly need to talk to at this hour?”

“A witch.”

“Say again?”

“A witch, I need to talk to a witch. She’s a girl, a younger teenage girl.” Trevor and David were now about twenty-two and they had their own reasons for being caught up in this mess. Mainly Trevor’s life. Trevor forgot he still needed to see Don too. He thought he might go tonight then decided against it. Tonight wasn’t right for that kind of visit. “Okay. Okay. Let me get this straight. There’s a younger teenage girl and she’s a witch.”

“Yes. She showed me the vision of the angel and how to find him.”

“Yet we still can’t actually find him.”

“Right.”

“So how do we find this witch?”

“She lives at the apartment buildings down by the pool.”

“Really now?”

“Yes. And we need to go see her tonight.”

“Well that’s new.”

“I know. I just met her two nights ago.”

“I guess let’s go then.”

“Let’s go? That easy, huh?”

“Yep. Do I really have a choice in the matter?”

“No. No you don’t.” Trevor said wily. “Alright.” They carted off to the complex on hopes she would be there waiting. Trevor knocked on the door again and again. “mmm.. What is it?” she came to out rubbing the sleepies out of her eyes. “I’m here because you said you were making a device to pull down the angel.”

“Oh. I did. I totally forgot.”

“Ahm. ahm. That’s alright. I wasn’t sure if I was going to use it anyway.”

“Really? Cause it’ll only take a little while to build.”

“Really? What’s it made of?”

“A few simple tools really. I need some sticks or boards preferably and anything that related to the angel. A feather or a symbol or something.”

“Ugh, I don’t know what that would be. So, I have to collect one of his feathers. And bring it back to you.”

“I wasn’t counting on you coming back to me, honestly.” she said. “Heh.”

“How’re we gonna be able to do this?” David said. “We’re gonna look for him and fight him. But, tonight I’m going to sleep.”

“Me too.” she said and closed the door on them. They sat in the midst of the midnight hours in the parking lot. The moon casting light on them among the streetlights, which were mostly out in the parking area.

“Do we go back?” David asked. “Yes, we won’t find him tonight. Let’s get some rest.” They went home without food or drink and Trevor left the light on on his front porch by accident. He arose on a Saturday with high hopes. To grab David was to be first on his list, but first he needed a bath and fast. As he lay there in the hot water, soaking up all his incursions and tensions, he wafted his hand through the water and some of it dribbled down his chin. Trevor was as always rehensible and biased. He couldn’t see why he had to rely on anyone, much less the witch or even Jamie.

He’d put so much stock into meeting up with them and he couldn’t find the enemies he was looking for. This was becoming troublesome and he was looking for a way to overcome these enemies or a way out. The former was probably the only way to go. He was left with only David to collect today. Maybe he could get Jamie later he thought. The sun was high in the sky today and he charged up the street to take David to wherever he could find the angel or just to train. David was fast asleep. His Mother had let him and he was laying cross legged on the bedspread with his chest puffed out and breathing heavily.

Trevor shook him awake and his eyes popped open, dazily saying, “Huh..” and lifting his back from the horizontal position. “Yo. It’s me.” Trevor said flatly. “Oh. Ha, hi.” he said. “So what do we do about this witch girl?” Trevor asked. “I guess we leave her alone till we need her again.”

“That won’t do. I have no way of tracking him other than her and I don’t have the time to just be running around randomly and empty headed.”

“Yeah, that could be a problem.” he raised his voice as he begun to wake up and do the same. He climbed out of the covers as he did and stood stark in his underwear waiting to be dressed. He couldn’t help but shiver after being under the warm covers and compared to the luke warm room it was nothing. Trevor was surprised that he was alert and comprehensible at this time. Not only that but that he was in his underwear too. David stood up and put on a pair of shorts that were sitting on the floor. “Are we going to revisit her on not.”

            “Likely but maybe not today.”

            “What shall we do?”

“Get Jamie again for one. But, no parties again.”

“You don’t say.” he said with an air of tainted aspiration. Like he knew it wouldn’t be happening but didn’t rightly care. They had their way with some toaster pastries in the cabinet and headed off to see Jamie. Surprisingly they didn’t find him there. One phone call lead to him to find he was around the area, just not at home. “Are you disappointed there won’t be any parties tonight?”

“No, I mean, we have matters to attend to.” Trevor knew he wasn’t lying to himself, but he got the feeling David thought he was. “What shall we do while we wait for him?”

“We could go see what the witch could show us.” Trevor was seriously thinking about it now. “So you wanna leave here and come back?”

“Yeah I was thinkin’ about it.”

            “Why do we just not?”

            “What are you implying?”

            “Do we really need Jamie?”

“Yes. His power is useful for a diversion. It could be extremely effective.”

“Well it seems like you’ve decided then.”

“Yes, we are bringing Jamie, that’s for sure.”

“Okay. It was beginning to feel like we didn’t really need him.”

“No. I think we do. It could affect the turnabout of this fight drastically.”

“You plan on fighting the angel with just the three of us?”

“No. I was considering recruiting that guy Alan as well.”

            “How can he help us?”

“He could help us deliver the finishing blow. Him or Simon.”

“What can they do again? I can’t keep up.”

“Ugh, if you don’t know just watch when they fight.”

“I can’t go in fighting blind.”

“Laser beams. They both fire laser beams.” This was turning into an argument. Trevor would need to adjust the conversation a bit to keep this from going further. “How about we just go see Karen?” Trevor had learned her name from the brief goodbye of his first visit. “Sounds like a plan.”

“I’ll text Jamie before I get there.” Trevor was going to ask him about Alan. He knew he knew Alan through Chase and as one of his intercessors. He was a vital piece to his victory. He started typing ten minutes before he arrived at Karen’s. He’d written; I won’t be there when you get back. See if you can get in contact with Alan and get him up and around. When he got out of the car in front of Karen’s small apartment, he tied his shoes tight and knocked on the door. She didn’t come right away this time. In fact he thought she may have lingered near the door for a couple of minutes before letting them in. As if she didn’t want to see them now for some reason. “Hi Karen.” he said in an amusing way off the tongue that made her look at him with bright eyes, as before she’d been very unsure of herself.

They sat in the living room and waited for her to come back down. “You see we need more use of your… talents. I need to know where he touched down.”

“I’ll give you one more chance. I can’t keep aiding the likes of you and it’s hard on me every time you come back to ask for my help.”

“Why is that?” David even raised an eyebrow. “That magic of yours is filthy and I want no part of it. That’s just one reason.”

“For your information it’s actually made of energy and I can’t tell you how much it means to me that you do.”

“Alright. I’ll go get the ball.” She hoisted herself up the stairs and Trevor caught a peek of her butt while she was. David looked at him with a sly smile and he just blushed and remained quiet with his hands folded. When she finally came back, bumbling down the stairs with the ball in her grip, she set down in the center of the room with an air of importance running through her head. He stepped down from the couch and locked his gaze upon her as she waved her hands over the ball with cloudy visions rolling in inside of it. David looked entranced just like the last time; it wasn’t the first time he’d been amazed by some things when the otherworldly gifts were bestowed upon him. He remembered that time he took him to see Don and got sickened by his touch. That’s when Trevor saw it. He could see the angel’s landing with the faintest tinge of sunlight on the outskirts of the view. He had no idea where he was looking at.

At first it was heartbreaking to see him fallen. So hidden on the hard ground, all alone from where he was standing. All of a sudden he recognized where he was. The park where he was, it was a dozen or so miles away, but he knew it. There had to be a way to get there faster. Trevor didn’t know what to do; he had his wheels turning but nothing came to mind. “I know where that is.” Trevor said. “Me too.” David told him. “I used to go to school around there. I’ve been to that park many times.

“What do we do about the target?” He asked his partner. “Well, you said we needed Jamie.”

“Oh! That’s right! Jamie.” Trevor hadn’t yet taken in account that time might be in a crunch. “We need to move now.”

“Wait… where are you…” Screamed Karen. But, Trevor was already headed for the car from inside the doorway. David was rising slowly and getting from the couch to the door. “C’mon c’mon.” Trevor kept saying. “What am I gonna do with you two and where are you going? I have no idea where that place is that he is.”

            “You don’t have to.”

“Well, why such a hurry. Is it so bad to be here with me for an extended period of time?”

“No, I just have to catch this one.”

“Oh poo. You’re going to work yourself to death.”

“I keep no leisure cept the day is done.” He said and bolted out the door. “What the f**k does that mean.” she said as she was left sitting there with the door wide open.
