Chapter 101: Drip-drop

Trevor’s lungs filled to the core with cold air. He waited patiently for David to get in his truck and go. For the time being, he couldn’t wait get home and out of the cold. He was intoxicated and emotional. He was out of control in a fit and just wanted to listen to more music. The only problem was he couldn’t play any through David’s speakers because he didn’t have any CDs. Everything was on his smart phone. So, as they made their way back, Trevor kept playing songs through his tiny phone speaker while he drove almost whimsically back to their residences. David seemed happy. But, who knows what was lurking under the veil of those eyes. He needed more fresh air, so he rolled down the window slightly for a gasp of air. David asked him to roll it back up so he did.

“Could you turn that music off too?” he said. “What? Why?”

“Because it’s wearing on my nerves.” He told him.. “You do know that music is my life.” he said. “Yes, but I just can’t take it right now.” Trevor clicked it off and huffed back into his seat. “Could you please stop breathing so loud?”

“What now you want me to stop breathing? This is f*****g ridiculous. I can’t believe I brought you out here tonight.”

            “Technically I brought you.”

“Yeah, but without me you wouldn’t know where to go.”

“If that’s how you feel.” he said viscerally. Trevor kept seeing double and kept quiet. All at once it started raining. Then thunder, then lightning. One shot right down at the street in front of them, then one way up ahead. David drove on until they reached where the second flash had been. A man was standing in the middle of the road and David slowed to a stop about thirty feet back. He couldn’t comprehend what was going on. “Wait a sec… could this be lightening bug?” Trevor instantly had fear poured into his heart. Alcohol was a good remedy for and against fear and right now Trevor felt it. David got out of the truck. Slowly tread toward the man, and kept on. Trevor flung himself out and ran after him. Not knowing what to expect from the one standing ominous in the middle of the roadway, he pressed on until they were less than ten feet away. That’s when David held his hand up. “What’re you doing in the road stranger?” he asked. “None of your concern.” it responded.

“It is my concern because I’m trying to get through here.”

“Well, I can’t stand any more of your bickering.”

“Our bickering is none of your concern.” David spoke. “It is my concern when I can hear you loud and clear all the time and every little argument that you have. You’re a dunce, and this one here is a really spoiled whiner who can’t handle himself much less anything else.”

“Hey, I’m supposed to be killing you.” Trevor spat. “Go ahead and try.” It said calmly. “David now!” Trevor commanded. “What?” he said. “Blast hi…” it was too late. The one who’d blocked their path had shot Trevor with a charge of electricity and capacitated him on impact. David stepped back in the driver’s seat and the one in the way jumped back up into the sky with the greatest of ease. With no idea where he’d gone too. David was left to pick up the unconscious Trevor and put him back in the truck.
