Chapter 90: The Nephelim

The translucent gleam of the air in winter grew apparent in the moonlight. Trevor was having boding thoughts about going out tonight. He was mulling over some ideas about stepping away from David and maybe Jamie too during the excursion. That meant that he could observe how David carried himself outside his own space. Trevor's that is. He quickly shifted and waved his hand. David then noticed him as fast as he could react. Now that Trevor had gone through what you would call a trial phase of normal life again, he would certainly have to blend in and be graceful as ever if he wanted to survive. Before that though, he craved a cigarette and a beer. He thought drinking one the blissful dusk air would be acceptable, if not advocated. David quelled down and walked the staircase. Trevor couldn't believe how much they'd grown. It was like a metamorphosis in the time-span of the five years they'd been together now. He wasn't aware if he was becoming sore from having to be put through all this. For starters, Trevor didn't have the faintest clue if he even wanted to be here, but now it was getting overbearing and tiresome. No doubt he could see it in his eyes. David was walking up to him. “I don't know how to say this, but I'm excited.” he told him.. “Oh really? Glad to hear it.”

“Yep. I even have my keds on.” Trevor looked down at his generic pair of running shoes.”

“You really need to update your style.” he said pessimistically. “When do you think we'll get in the car and go?” he changed the subject. “Whenever Jamie's ready.” he replied. That's when it hit him. Maybe he'd have to put the breaks on being the cornerstone for a while. Maybe he'd been going about this the wrong way. If anything he at least needed to settle down in a manner of speaking. Tonight could be friend's night, and David and he would stay away from each other. Like the positive and negative ends of magnets. Trevor thought this analogy kind of queer. Like he himself was repulsive even though he knew quite the opposite to be so. Trevor looked at his friend distillated as his smoke wafted into the night. He said a few words to David along the lines of him wanting a beer himself. He declined and Trevor went to get one himself. The box was hard to open for some reason. He knew it was because it was so cold, but got aggrivated anyway. He cracked one open and got on top of the car, shuffling and swinging his legs. In that moment, he looked up at the near-half moon, or maybe the other way around and sat there in awe of its majesty. In a brooding twenty-seven seconds he down a cold one with his eyes still cast up to the skies. Time was flying by and he yearned to go lay back in the driver's seat with music on. He did just that. While David was looking chilly, not that it wasn't cold in the vehicle. It had probably cooled to the outside temperature, Trevor felt kind of sorry for him. “Do you want your coat?” Trevor asked after cranking the window slightly. “Yes. Yes please.” he said with urgency. Trevor snaked his arm backwards and grabbed it, he tossed it balled up at David's face and he caught it chest level. “Hell, throw me a brew too.”

“Okay, but I'm not gonna throw it.” he said full of angst. “Just an expression my man.”

“Yeah, yeah, what're we going to do if Jamie doesn't come back out?” he knew that wouldn't happen, he just wanted to strike up conversation. “What makes you think that.”

“I don't know. It seems like he's become more and more of a loner as of late.”

“You really think so, huh?” he asked. “Yes, I do; And also you tend to answer a lot of questions with questions, you know that?”

“I wasn't informed of that, thanks for telling me.” he said sarcastic and kind of spiteful. Trevor knew it. He wasn't happy with the current situation. He could only hope he would continue on with the designated path. “What choice do either of us have?” he contemplated. There he hopped off the top of the car. The same time he did Jamie came bustling out the door. “Hey!” David exclaimed loudly. Jamie made a shushing motion. “My parents are asleep.” was the first thing out of his mouth. “Oh, sorry.”

“It ain't no thing.” he pronounced accentually. “So, where are we headed?” he asked politely. “The other side of this town.” Technically Jamie had moved to another town over. Though he was still very close. He noticed his own accent when he spoke. Somewhere between a southern drawl and a bro. Though it was not something he normally kept track of. Trevor waited for Jamie to give the get go. “Alright were ready.” he said about three minutes later. “We're good to go?”

“Yes, indeedy.” Trevor snickered at his choice of words. Riding through the cold night, he almost felt alone in the car. The other two were quiet as mice and didn't have the nerve to speak to him. Maybe they were preparing for the party ahead, or maybe something else.
