Double-TimeA Chapter by Stephen CaldwellChapter 87: Double-Time
The way the proceedings of the last night went, Trevor ached from head to foot. He didn’t even try to heal himself, the injuries weren’t serious enough to warrant that. He figured David wasn’t using nearly the extent of his strength to mess with him. Though it didn’t negate ill feelings for the act. Now, he was feeling rough. Like his head had been battered several times, if anything he did have a sharp pain in his back. He was going to take the fight to the monstrosity that blew up that police car. If any other foes were included in that procedure, they stayed unknown for now. A ring at the door from the bell. “Nice timing.” he thought sarcastically. He opened up the door and expectantly enough it was David. “Morning, what’s goin’ on?” he asked him. “I guess I just wanted to be around somebody.” “Oh, feeling bad about last night?” Trevor peered at him with a smile. “Nah, not really.” he kind of grinned superficially. “I actually had some plans though.” “Really? What might those be?” “I was thinking we could go visit Ashley and another girl with them.” “Who else and where?” “Her house; And technically there’s one more girl with them, but she has a newborn and things could get kind of temperamental if you act up around her.” “Okay. Whatever you say, sounds good to me. I’ll get dressed.” Off Trevor went to put his clothes on. Then he changed in the bathroom, and ran out the door. For an opportunity of a decent meeting, this time, was fantastic. He had short hair and a pair of blue jeans. Though he was wearing a band tee he’d had for years now, he didn’t know what to do with his shoes. They were a beaten shell of their former selves and they didn’t look right with his outfit. “Do you have any shoes I can borrow.” he asked David shyly. “Yeah, I know one pair I could give you he responded. “Mkay.” Trevor said in his usual confirmating manner. He ran him up to his house. David ducked into his doorway and Trevor waited abrasively for him to come back. He now sat facing the streetside, but the inner sector of the house front. He remembered playing there as a child and meeting the road a few times. Even so he couldn’t explain why it was such an increasing development process. The way he grew up probably wasn’t the most acceptable, but he knew that he had a strong background and that always meant much in life. His eyes met with David when he stepped back down the pathway. When he got in he shut the door and laid the shoes down on the console and put his hand down on them. “I’m gonna give these to you, but you’ll have to promise me that you won’t go crazy around our hosts. I want things to go smoothly, and if you don’t I’ll have to take them back to my house and burn them.” “Hey, uh, okay. But, why?” “Because, do you notice anything special about them?” “Yeah.” Trevor looked down. A pair of flats with a camouflage design and dark green laces were in the spot where his armrest was. He took a good look at them. “I like em’.” “Good. Now let’s get going.” Trevor then wheeled off to anything but here and awaited his friend to divulge where to head to. David told him where to go and Trevor made it there in approximately sixteen minutes. For now, they rested in the side of the house in the street. David was standing outside the vehicle and Trevor was forbearing to open his driver’s seat door. He watched as David tried on the phone once or twice. Then, eventually he received a return call and was talking to someone. “Who is it?” Trevor questioned. He waved his hand in a disregarding motion. Trevor accepted it. Like so many times before he sat complacent and brooding. He moved barely an inch to the left and a car whizzed by and he was kind of shaken. He wished he could go inside. David ended up getting off the phone. “Who was it?” he asked him. “An associate. They haven’t gotten back to me yet.” he said. Suddenly a few bodies came rounding the side of the building. Three girls walked around the lawn and made their way to a stair set. Trevor got out. Three girls were between them and the front porch of a lower middle-class niche of a home and David was already floating aimlessly closest to the one on the right, who had dark hair and seasoned looking eyes. Trevor had begun to collect some things and put others away in the car for safeties sake. The trouble was that they were already getting away back through some door unbeknownst to him. He then slammed the door shut and ran. The rain came down and Trevor scurried up to where they were heading. But, for a brief second, he looked up and saw the sun in and behind the clouds. Shining an array of shades that left him dumbfounded. So he walked in by himself, ignoring that they hadn’t waited for him or even stayed by the door. Somewhere inside him he was deeply irritated by this, but since he was included as soon as he reached the center of the house he let it slide. For the time, he sat quietly and listened half-heartedly to what they were saying and David’s educing responses. He went back to the bathroom to wash the rainwater of his face. By now, he’d learned the names of the trio, but for that purpose he wanted to keep quiet because the fact was he didn’t’ know two out-of-three. He knew one and she was Ashley. But, as they disclosed themselves rather eagerly, Trevor had to suppose that he was not in the environment where he could simply engross himself in who they really were. The small talk was inimitable and sometimes odd. Though he felt comfortable and in place, he didn’t know why David felt distanced from him. Maybe it was a literal position from the sides of the room or maybe something else. With what he did the former night, it could be he was fed up with the business at hand and just feeling defiant at most. However, he couldn’t help wondering if there was more to it. Going with the flow of things, Trevor spoke up more than once, if there was any conflict of communication he wasn’t aware of it. The late afternoon rolled in and then they sat fixed in the kitchen. They made some dish that tasted like potato stew and joked for the duration of the hour. Then, David went to the bathroom and Trevor sat mindlessly at the table poking the empty rim of the bowl. He saw the one called Tara washing dishes and she came and scooped up his dish. He became bored after she did so and he watched her run off to the back of the house. Which he guessed was where her room was. He remained quietly with only Ashley and the one David approached earlier named Megan. © 2016 Stephen Caldwell |
