Chapter 73: Tortuga Under the Shell

"There isn't anything here as far as I can tell." Trevor said aloud. He was more talking to himself. Jamie responded anyway. "What would be here? What do ya think destroyed that car?"

"I don't know but I know it wasn't human that's for sure."

"You think some thing did this?" he asked. "Do you think I'm playing around? Did I stutter?"

"Alright. Sheesh. So if some... Uh.. Thing did this, where do you think it went?"

"How should I know? I didn't expect anything else to be coming around."

"That's.... Weird." he said. "Yeah, no kidding."

"What could be happening here?" he asked. "Basically some large creature blew up those buildings and that car."

"Okay. How about telling me how you suppose we find something like that."

"I guess we don't. Unless..." Trevor moved about somewhat. It took a few seconds to come forth to the beginning of the trail. "What time is it?" he asked. "Eleven twenty-three." he answered. "So that means... The cops had to have arrived around late nine o'clock."

"That could be right." he said. Trevor hauled up the trail and broke out to the roadside. "Where did they go?" Jamie said dumbfounded. "You were the one who disliked their company in the first place..." Trevor said cynically. "So what're we doing?"

"I'm thinking." he said. "Ugh." he sighed. "Let's go back a-ways." Trevor said. They jetted back away from the site, a bunch of turns on the left, till finally he finally picked one. It was unbearably without visibility. The low-branches above the tight-stretch of road could be seen but as for the sides you couldn't get a view at all. It made for an awfully hard place to drive. Trevor sat back in his seat and let the yellow lines do the driving. It took a spell for him to remind himself where he was and how far he'd gone down this roadway. Trevor looked to the right and found an opening to a driveway. It had crossed dividers like a railway forebodingly guarding. He took it as a sign to not step out and go any further. Like any time before, he stopped and thought a minute about what to do now. It might've taken him a while to decide if he should go back or not but he was disrupted by a gust that hit him profuse and blew through the car right to Jamie's closed window and separated as it slashed his face.

In milliseconds he heard trees brushing and flying down the bend where he couldn't observe. "Whoa! What was that?" he said. Standing briskly waiting for his friend to give him an answer. "The hell do I know?" he snapped back. "We have to follow it and find it. C'mon." As if Jamie had no choice but to be in the car with him. It took him a long time to run into anything minorly out of the ordinary. Not too say it couldn't be ordinary, but Trevor saw a split shaft in the moonlight of undistinguished onset. He continued chasing it down. "So what do you think it was?" pressed his friend in the passenger seat. "I don't know. But, were going to find out if we can."

"What for?" he asked. "What do you mean what for? Why would I go after anything if I wasn't trying to kill it?" he said. "Oh. Well then." he quietly fumbled around. "But, who knows maybe I won't have to. Highly unlikely though."

“You don't say?" he said sincerely flabbergasted. In any case, the road was getting smaller and would probably pan out somewhere or it would come to an brusque end. It took him two minutes to find clarify which that would be. He stopped at a large road where it bent. A dangerous place to put a turn really, "Nevermind that."

Trevor strode to the right because it would lead to the way home. All in one instant something with wings moved past the car on Jamie's side. It whipped around and slammed onto the hood of the car and got hold of the windshield wipers. Pressing the sole of its shoe onto the windshield and stepping with all its strength to try to crack it. Trevor got over an inch or so and stomped the breaks. Then when almost to a stop pulled the emergency break and skidded sideways. The wipers broke off along with the hostile entity that fell onto the road. Whatever it was got up immediately and tried to take off. Trevor got out and ran for it, attempting to stop it. He turned on time-stop in the midst of its take off. What he saw was practically man with wings, it took him four seconds to move his head up to where it was and that was when he got an ill-feeling. Was this the creature the red ball was talking about? It didn't seem so. Though there was telling if it was. All he knew was what he could see at this point. The bottoms of its shoes and the tip of its wing were visible on the dark section of the road. He went back to normal time and reached for it accostly. He felt moronic trying to do so. Though, what was he to do? There he stood, with Jamie for sure gawking agape. It wouldn't have surprised him either if the thing were gone for good and would not show itself again. He got back in the car and said, "What now?" Jamie was speechless. "Figures." He shifted into reverse and backed up. He touched his hand on the shifter and then in a heartbeat the sunroof started getting scratched. It was back again and he heard it brake the sunroof with a hard stamp. Luckily, the guard was out and caught all the pieces of glass. It took a minute for him to react, then he revved ahead and it apparently flew back and landed on the edge of the road. Trevor, pulled over almost exactly where he had before and jumped out of the car breaking straight for it. It was there under the light of the moon, it's feathers closed around its thighs and glaring at him impositionally. When Trevor got to a respectable distance he stood and the winged-person swung its wings immaculately. It might for a terror he hadn't before discovered. It was a flighty sense of amazement mixed in and Trevor hung on to his pant leg while he kept his eyes on it. Intensely he raced for it, holding his right hand in his left, hoping to catch it in some spontaneous way. He didn't need to worry about avoiding what it might do, he was more disposed with it eluding him. If it got one good way around him, it would have him impaired in the time it took to see it move. So Trevor didn't really have the specification to rapt himself in whether he would miss or be beaten down. It made him lose all touch with control in his charge and went for the shoulder blades. He was kicked in the face and fell down. The accelerated kick swooped down on him like a raptor. It didn't make for a very sufferable touch. He lay unconscious now with Jamie in the car sitting. "What could he be doing?" run through Trevor's mind for the very last second. He got up moments later, feeling insanely dazed and on the upheaval he couldn't help but stagger more than the last time he'd gotten knocked down. For the first glance he looked to the car, Jamie had shelled himself inside the front seat, probably locked all the doors too. The ornithurous creature was transfixed between the other side of the car and the tail light, dragging its wings on the ground and moving steadily, knowing it would have no trouble getting into the vehicle now still.

He took off and stumbled, trying to balance himself to begin a run. But, for course of a minute he couldn't see straight and his head was killing him. He might've had a concussion now, or lost a few brain cells, or maybe, he just had a head injury. It wasn't clear to him. The next step might have been one that got him centered to attack it from the back. But, he couldn't seem to get his foothold. He tripped and fell on the asphalt hitting his face on it again. Then pressed himself up with his hands and started again. He rushed for the side of the car and ran into the monster before he did so. He wasn't consciously aware of where he was going. Just doing everything to try to get where he could get a vantage point. If anything his power had fallen out of his hand and he couldn't wield it. It was wildly out of his control and it started pouring onto the street and fizzing while he tried to smush his hand into the angelic creature. "What do you think you're doing?" it said and pushed him against the car without touching him. "Ahh!" he screamed in pain. He couldn't do anymore without his sight. "I could use my friend's help right now." he could only hope for. Jamie was crammed somewhere in that car. He had to be.

"Where's Jamie?" he yelled blabberingly. He wasn't quite right in the mind and didn't have the capacity to bawl out coherently. "What's a Jamie? Better question. Why haven't I killed you yet?" it said. Trevor was benumbed. He couldn't look it in the face and definitely couldn't cry out for help. "What is that you're holding?" Trevor's hand was pouring out and it was crackling all over the cement. "I don't know what you're talking about." he said and leaped for the bird like man once more. He was caught up by the neck and dangled in the air like a toy. He couldn't believe this was happening. He waited for it to speak more. "How have you found me this night, human?" it strung with arrogance. It made Trevor want to get down from its immense grip, but he couldn't. He was being held by his skin through his shirt and it was painfully clenching. He couldn't recall where he'd felt something like that before. Trevor groaned and said, "I tracked you down from the commotion you caused earlier. The emergency vehicles were everywhere, didn't you see them?" he asked. "What you speak of, I do not know. The other one, isn't in there." he pointed to the front car window. "Where would he have gone?"

"I don't know this area! We were trying to catch you!" he said. "Catch me? How did you think that was going to go?" he said. "Well, I didn't even know what you were..." Trevor mumbled. "So, how do you think you'll catch me now, huh?" he questioned a second time. "I... What? What do you want me to say?" he sobbed. "Nevermind. Get out of here." he said. Trevor smacked the ground when it dropped him. He couldn't believe what he was witnessing. "How could I stop that thing? Much less where did Jamie go?" he wondered. He took his precious time laying there face to the road waiting to get up and do something. Something about any of this. He got to his feet at about torso level. "Why are you here winged man?" he requested ostentiously. He didn't care if he agitated it or lost his life. What he did have to know is where it was coming from and where it was getting to. "One basic thing. I've come here to pacify the child of Don. The one he set out to detain all demons."

"Why would you want to do that?" Trevor wailed. "What would you ask me that for?" he bellowed. "Because why would you want to stop them from returning to where they belong?" he said. "Because that is the will of the mighty one. I do as I'm told."

Trevor wiped a tear from his face and rose to his feet. "Then the one you're looking for is me." he snarled.
