Chapter 68: See me Splayed

In about twelve miles, he expelled the smell of stale cigarettes and body odor from his automobile by tossing the ash tray out of the window. “An open cup holder would do nicely.” Jamie and Laurie were following him past the inlet just before the interstate. He snatched the button with a hook and leveled it back closed. After five minutes of driving he felt relieved with his advancement, rolling over exits and away from his city. He could see their car far behind in the left lane going as fast as they needed to. Trevor knew how to get to the right exit, but not how to get off and into the city where he needed to be. It was a frustrating thought that he couldn’t find where he was looking for. The outfit he was wearing was getting wrinkled with a light perspiration. He didn’t have the mentality to turn on the AC right now though. He hurried and gunned off onto the secondary interstate that pushed on to his destination. Far be it from him to lead them all around the city with no idea where he was going. But, it was already under way now. Nothing he could do but make the best decisions possible. To begin with he didn’t think it would be that difficult to find. Though, if he couldn’t get to the first central length of road, he wouldn’t have any problems. This was what he knew. So when he curved off the exit he had to take. He came to a halt and placed himself there. Thinking about both which way he should turn and looking for them coming up behind him. He didn’t feel uncomfortable at all sitting there, it would be much worse to run around needlessly. One thing was that he couldn’t quite locate which one of the central streets were the right one. He had an wide open panning visual of the basic entry to the location. He surmised that if he got right there he would have to figure out if it was the right street name or not, and he couldn’t think of what it was. If he couldn’t find it after a time, he would simply leave. It was the thing Trevor was most certain of. They finally skirted up behind him after a minute or two of deep thought. Trevor opened up his window and pointed to the left with his index finger. He opened up down the stretch of road up to the uptown zone and took a left at the line where a stop light divided the city. Screaming up a hill in a constant way, there wasn’t much traffic because it was getting close to six in the evening. He wanted to make it there before the doors locked. Right as rain was he who pulled into the parking lot after he found the place when he got there.

It was a touch easier to light up a cigarette when he got there, also getting out of the car was a good move. He bunched up on the side of the sidewalk, ensuring he would see his companions of they rounded the corner. When it was finished he hadn’t seen a single car go by, much less them. He walked off toward the stop light. Nothing, their vehicle was nowhere in sight. He walked back and to the park below, it never dawned on him they might’ve gotten lost, not seeing him make the right at the next light. He forced himself to call him, and got a signal when he got to higher ground. It rang and rang, he hung on perseveringly for one to pick up the phone. When the line came on, he didn’t hear anything, no voices anyway. Just a ruffling and an ominous goding sound from the other line. He raised the phone up to the other ear and suddenly it shut off. He sumpted endlessly for what was really ten minutes in the square. It made several seconds seem like many. Outing his position was not a good plan if he had the choice not to. He jogged to the park-side and to the light that sat down there. Out of all the cars, he finally saw them. Sitting in a slot on the opposite side looking innocuous and shrouded, he didn’t want to go over there as soon as he did, but his primal instincts were telling him to. He slowly walked to the middle of the park and stood in the grass for two minutes. It didn’t make sense to think that anything was wrong. Fast-forward to three minutes later, he was at the outside of the car and there was obviously no one in there. It wasn’t too dark since the sun was shining like a stage-light. It didn’t add up. Where were they? Trevor looked inside and opened the door"unlocked. He didn’t look around to see if they were anywhere else. He grabbed the CD case on the seat. It read JM in big letters on the top. He looked around and saw the girl’s wallet in the side panel. He grabbed it and looked inside at her driver’s license. They put it back down. Why had they disappeared and these things hadn’t? Trevor was befuddled.
