Chapter 60: Red on Arrival

They left out of Jamie’s home around five in the afternoon. Trevor was concentrated on getting to anywhere they could sit and formulate develop an idea as to where to take a stand. In an odd sort of arrangement he did not choose a parking center. He went to the park to park. Daily lives went by as Trevor and he sat in the scorching car at the high point of the day. “What now?” he asked. Trevor was at a loss for words. He searched his brain for some kind of indication of where he could find the next target. Although, it wasn’t something he was heedless about doing. If he needed David he could call on him at any time. But for now, he was still outside the trappings of his destiny. Now more than ever, he didn’t want to be. But, he would have to be strong. Trevor swapped the CD in the player and asked Jamie if he wanted to get out and go for a walk. He said no. Trevor listed off bands for a while. While scrolling through his texting like he usually did. There was an impending unsettling nature about the way the park and the weather looked like. If he found he had the time, he would mark it down on a notepad. For a while, it stayed like this. He himself stepped out of the car and smoked a cigarette. Jamie stayed in and ruffled his pants and did odd mannerisms for the entirety of their sitting there. While he couldn’t find what he was looking for, he did have the bright idea to deluge himself with texting someone he never had before. It was an enticing notion, and he received one back very quickly. Flattening out his belt buckle and staggering around the parking lot, he mostly stared at the sky and out through the trees on the far side of the road. For some reason the park didn’t hold what he liked to see. Trevor put his cell phone back in his pocket and got back in the car. More so than not, it was the most boring time he’d had in a long time. He put on a few songs and got off the radio kick he’d been on lately. The sun was beaming, and then as if by magic, it grew dull and nightfall started to appear. He whisked off down the hill after starting the car with Jamie in it. He slammed the brakes at the very bottom portion of the lot and looked at the view where he could see everything. In a moment’s notice, it did become night. He shrugged at this phenomena and went back to sitting back in his seat. Jamie had been texting someone the whole time. Not a moment too soon did the pedestrians in the park go back to wherever they came from, than a complete blackout fell over the place. He wasn’t aware if the spotlights usually went out after dark. Trevor turned the key one notch and flicked on his headlights. The roadway before him glew a bold yellow and he could swear he could see right through the forest behind it. Jamie asked him what was going on. Of course he didn’t know. If anything, there wasn’t a thing wrong here, but he had to make sure. If the warning signs were correct there was more to come. He saw the last light go out and pitch black wash over him. Against his better judgment, he got out of the car and walked out to the end of one of the parking slots. If he jumped down the ledge, he might hurt his feet from the landing,, so he ran around the other side and on to the sidewalk.  After a minute or so of this, he realized Jamie definitely wasn’t following him. He didn’t actually need him right now, but he was banking on the fact he wouldn’t at all. He would have to be keen on facing anything. He took off into the woods and ended up back on the trail that led to the same place he’d been before now. Though this time on the downward slope by the highway. Jamie would probably have no idea where he went. So, like he always did he set back his stride and looked for some kind of way down from the hill that didn’t require going all the way around the trail. He thought this a bad idea, since he couldn’t see. But, he started heading that direction anyway. He tumbled down the dampened slope and hit a tree on his left side, slamming the outside piece of his arm, almost snapping it. He bounced and slid down the increasing slant and passed out beneath a bush that lay not far from the paved path. Regaining consciousness somewhere around ten and a half minutes later, he lifted himself off the ground with his palms and feet and tossed his axis about to assure himself he wasn’t in any danger. He felt around for a tree to grab onto to sensibility. Losing navigational skills and where he could find the pathway again. He understood that he had to get back to it, whether it be to turn back to the park or check things out the other way. Out in the distance he heard a crackling of the wooded parts, he became afraid right away. When he heard more sounds coming from the forest, he ducked and hid behind the tree next to a line of shrubbery. “Yoooo!” he heard from around the corner. Probably where he had taken the easy way down and tripped. Trevor knew it to be Jamie. He stepped out from behind the tree and turned back the way the park was. He ran out to the trail, he had an idea of where it would be now. He approached the hill and the footsteps got closer, many paces away from him he heard Jamie say, “Where are y…” and then a muffled scream. Trevor ran up the hill, spanning the distance in less time than he thought possible. Then suddenly, he hit the ground with a thud, nearly missing cracking his head on the concrete.
