Sympatic IllusionsA Chapter by Stephen CaldwellChapter 59: Sympatic Illusions
“Oh, did that really happen?” Trevor’s first thoughts when he awoke. Feeling soggy from the sweat he was covered in last night after slaying that wraith. He toddled to the bathroom and cleaned his teeth. “Woo” he said when he was done. Once he got up and about. Also dressed, he gave Jamie a call. Things were seeming to fly by once he got it going. He chose to text him rather than call. It took seconds, rather than the entire length of a ring to get through to him. Like the last time he greeted him quite informally. Personally Trevor hadn’t grown accustomed to it. Living in the moment he struck out for the second try at contracting him. There was no need to reach him again by phone. He already knew where his new house was. Trevor was speeding. He didn’t sort out whether or not he had the means to force Jamie to come around. For if there wasn’t a regal sort of code set in, then it wouldn’t work. For Trevor, if he could keep this going at all costs. He would. The way things were going he didn’t know if they would. Trevor could picture the situation going all wrong and the unforeseen future of demon’s destroying the world could come to reality. He wiped off his hands and touched the brake lights when he got in the driveway of Jamie’s new place. Forgetting his keys in the car, he walked in anyway. He rung the bell.
He came to the door in no time, Trevor greeted him. Looking at him, he could see that he hadn’t been getting into anything lately. He looked like he’d just been sitting around and resting and probably working with whomever in his family or seeing somebody. That Trevor didn’t know. If he’d known why the comprising of Jamie’s enlistment would come to tear him to pieces he probably wouldn’t have. However, Trevor sat in the computer room waiting for him to get ready. When he finally came in, he stared at Trevor with a blank gaze. It wasn’t for a lack of acknowledgement, but just that he looked uncertain. Trevor led right into it. He started off with telling him what had been going on. The demon’s, the trip to another world, the powers, the contravenes that bound him, and the Don. He was abstruse. He didn’t grasp what he was really telling him. So for the time being, Trevor let it sit. He hung on to his phone in case he thought he’d need David’s assistance. For the time, he waited with Jamie in awkward silence. Eventually, Jamie broke in. “So how do I fit into this?” “Well, you’re one of the seven so far. So if you can help me now I sure would appreciate it.” “What do you mean seven?” he said. “There’s seven. Seven human beings who can get this done.” He looked at him funny. “Why that many?” “I actually don’t know why that is…” he told him.. Another quiet minute. “What do you plan to do?” “First of all, track down one more Demon. There was this guy named Alex, and he kind of stood out to me. I think I can get a hold of him if I call David. That’s why I’ve been holding my phone for the past half-hour.”
Waiting to think of what to say, Trevor never felt so absolved in his life. He thought he believed him. “Oh.” An idea, he showed off his hands to Jamie. With proof sure he would… “What the f**k! What the f**k is that?” he looked at him like an aberration. Trevor told him that he wasn’t lying. Then pressed it off in the way that he did, “So… again what can I do?” Trevor liked where this was going. He spouted off something about the construes and what was the likely event of the end. Jamie agreed he wasn’t all for living with the outcome and the matters to come. So for starters, there was the matter of tracking down one more demon. The man on fire, to be precise. He hadn’t again been stalked by the burning demon, but he knew there had to be a time to get at him. If enough could be thrown at him at once, they could win. Likewise, this could all backfire and they could all be burned alive and lose everything. By they, probably David, Jamie, and himself. Trevor was ashamed of the way he’d lightened the situation up in his divulgence to Jamie. But, if he wanted him to be a part of the team, he would have to think it would be something they would be able to accomplish. On the porch at Jamie’s, he hung off the side of the railing thinking about what to do. He lit up a cigarette and metaphorically punched a hole in the wall because he didn’t know what he could do right now. Slacking off of the railing and getting back in his car. He couldn’t wait to call David, but he didn’t know if he should. This time he practiced what he would say and shifted the conversation piece from where he want to be to what he wanted to get done. Trevor cradled his cell in his right hand waiting to make a call or not. If he’d any clue where David was he might not have called. But, for the moment, he presumed it wouldn’t hurt not to. He reached him very soon after he saw Jamie go back in his house. He’d probably been out there to see what the waste disposal situation was looking like. His trash can and recycle. “Hey buddy.” He said wistfully. Trevor kind of cringed. “What’s up, where are you?” Trevor got hesitation from the other line and as well was hesitant. “Well, I wouldn’t really like to discuss that right now. But, what’s up? Do you need me?” was what he was told. Trevor thought carefully, “Yeah, I didn’t know if you were getting up for anything later, but I might need you again tonight.” He said. “Oh, yeah man, I can do that. Just, uhhh, call me when you are doing something and I’ll have to drive over.” “Okay. Excellent.” Trevor said hard-lined. He moved on back to the top-side porch and sat there thinking about why it was he thought he would even need them on a day like this. If he knew what was in store for him it wouldn’t be the way it was before. Trevor gathered his things and asked Jamie if he wanted to go for a ride. He said he was game. © 2016 Stephen Caldwell |
