RabbitsA Poem by Rachel HarperA poem about innocence, corruption, and evil.
We watched them come running up the porch and
You would really love to scorch them
You might just torture them
But as long as they’re willing
The idea is appealing
And you ask me what I see
And I tell you in all honesty
They look like rabbits to me.
They don’t know what they’re getting into
Because they truly don’t know you
They think because you smile
That you’re a kind person to hang with for awhile
But they just don’t know
You think as long as it is in their wills
Then there’s no need to run for the hills
No need to go.
There they are crouched down in the grass
Watching you creatures pass
And they can run if they want to
But they don’t feel they have to
Because it’s so great to be
And you ask me what I see
And I tell you in all honesty
They look like rabbits to me.
They like to dance in front of danger
But they’re so sweet and innocent
You’re a stranger
And now it no longer matters about consent
You now have complete intent
You’re no ranger, you have no soul
No time left to jump in a hole
It’s time for the final toll.
You let the dogs tear and rip at their backs
It’s time for the creature’s final attack
And the rabbits realize it all now
Everything is so clear but they don’t know how
How to get away
It’s all too late, white turns to black
All hope slips through the cracks
Now the rabbits are going to pay.
So young and clean they once were
What you’ve done feels like murder
They’ve lost their selves and now they’re me
Reliving and reliving this misery
No longer pure
And you ask me what I see
And I tell you in all honesty
They look like rabbits to me.
No matter what, they always lose
Next time let them choose
Before they ignorantly decide
Tell them why they should run and hide
Because that was once me
Bending down at your knee
And someone asked you what you see, what do you see
And you said with a smirk she looks like a rabbit to me.
Here I am breaking away slowly
And all these rabbits down here know me
That I’ve never been a creature
Though at once I thought it was my feature
Now I know who I am
And I’m not one of them
Let the light come down and show me
I was a rabbit to begin with and now a person to end with.
Let the rabbits free!
Let the rabbits free!
That was once me
But if you set us free
People we will soon be
People once again
I know who I am
And I’m only me in the end.
