Internal Antonymy

Internal Antonymy

A Poem by Dustin
"

We all have our internal demons, that polar opposite that is strikingly familiar. We all do battle with ourselves, and the balance of power waxes and wanes. Sometimes, one side finally loses.

"

You silly fool, you’re here again; knocking at my door
Oh, the pain surrounds you, yet you wonder what it’s for
Still you keep returning, seeking shelter and retreat
Down on hands and knees you once again admit defeat
I told you once, I told you twice; you cannot have it all
When you’re aiming for the stars forever you will fall
Yet you did not listen, or heed the truth I spoke
I warned you of the madness that path would soon provoke
I’ll give you one more chance, to prove it’s not too late
But if you do not listen then you’re sorrow’s much too great

Do you know just who it is, you’re begging for some aid?
So there’s no confusion, let me drop this whole charade
I am the one who told you so, after every failed attempt
That little voice that angers you and fuels all your contempt
My blood is made of liquid pain, each wound beats my heart
I keep growing stronger as you just fall apart
My skin is wreathed in scars and my body made of ache
Born from all the anger that you simply could not take
I’m everything that you reject, cast out of the light
So slowly in the darkness I have given you a fight
You think you’re so much better, some righteous paragon
But who’s the one that’s laughing now that everything is gone?

Do you still not recognize the truth that I inspire?
Perhaps you know my brother, the one of ash and fire
Yes, I see it in your eyes; you know my nature now
And frantically you try to flee from this fact somehow
Yet in your struggle you forget, it’s not pain that I’ll give to you
Instead I’ll turn those tears of yours into something new
Don’t you want that freedom? Relief from all this hurt?
Just speak my name, and in an instant you’re feelings will convert
Free from pain, and suffering, true immortality
Lose yourself and settle in this new personality
What do you say? We have a deal? You will not be let down
Upon the thrown of cruelty you shall wear the devil’s crown
If you decline, then what is left? There’s no hope still in your eyes
So leave what’s lost and come along, insanity’s your prize.

So true. The endless internal dialogue, arguing with ourselves. Nicely put.
