THE TERRIBLE

THE TERRIBLE

A Poem by Abioduun

I looked at the sky beaming only the twinkling light of the stars,
Then I wondered what happened to the bright sunny day moments ago,
What darkened the beautiful sky wonderfully spread above?
Where is the majestic Sun whose brightness my eyes could not contest?
Where are the singing birds, creatures to creep around for all to see?
Why are the streets deserted and the busy paths no longer adorned with feet?
Even the branches and blooming bud seem to cast a gloomy spell when I looked too long.
Darkness is indeed powerful, ancient ruler of the wings of the night.

But then, like the flip of a book page,I saw a crack in the cloud,
Darkness paving way for the enthronement of light,
I saw the sun rouse like a lion when challenged,
Then the earth and her fullness came alive as if called out of death.
I marvel when I consider the force that made these extremes,
And mapped out the boundary for day and night, life and death,
A certain dread fell upon me when I realized this same force called me forth,
Even the tiny ant.

THIS IS MY CONCLUSION, MY MAKER IS TERRIBLE.

Author's Note

Abioduun
so many questions came to mind as I lay till dawn thinking about why we all have to stay in our dens at a certain time or even sleep. I asked questions like what if night was when we all go out and day was when we sleep? I guess we wont even consider it as not normal.

I enjoyed this piece, it reminds me of the Book of Revelation. My only suggestion is the pacing seemed rushed at times, but that could have just been on my end.

In reference to your author's note, I don't think you're alone in such thoughts. I think one thing that makes us human is the insatiable curiosity that we have. I'm glad your poem gives a very beautiful description of the contrast of night and day and although the coherence with the two stanzas and the standalone last line, for me, doesn't seem so much in tune (a few more lines after might have helped though), I think we've all been in such a mental state as you rightly noted.

Things could be different. We all could decide to go out in the night rather than in the day. That's the beauty of being a dominant specie on this planet. We sorta are able to control the flow of things. We could decide we want the night and believe me, all creatures of the night would somehow have to adapt to using the day. It's that easy. As your poem rightly describes, night and day each has their own beauty. So basically, none is superior to the other. As such, like you rightly guessed, if ever such a day was to come, we truly won't even consider it as not normal.

Anyways, great poem, Biodun. Keep writing.
