A bargain

A spider I know, once, told me in jest

While dangling head down and butt in the air

I could use my web to make you a vest

But no more cleaning or dusting, now swear!

I clicked on this particular story because it reminded me of a story I really liked, "The Spider's Thread" by Ryūnosuke Akutagawa. Of course that is where resemblances end! It is a funny, almost surreal image, that this poem paints. The real question is, Did you accept the bargain? I am thinking not. ;) Besides, a vest made of spider's thread, it sounds like a trap!

I must confess that I've never heard of Akutagawa. However, you must've gathered, by now, that I write for the fun of it. No hidden meanings or messages to pass on to the future generations. I just love to write in English and fool around in an attempt to paint a smile on the face of the reader, which would please me no end. As for the bargain, I'm debating my friend. But I'm seriously tempted.

Not many people have heard of him... he is a Japanese author; I probably only know about him because I speak Japanese. I love using allegory, so I don't really write too many comedies on here. Anyway, not many people on here write comedy; so your writing is a breath of fresh air!

thx heaps, Nusquam. Goes straight to my heart. "ikiru bekika, shenu bekika, koregamon daida" the spelling is probably horrendous. Is that correct?

生きるべきか死ぬべきか, これが問題だ, would be romanized as "Ikiru bekika Shinu bekika, Kore ga Gamondai da."

where did you learn that anyway? did you study Japanese before?

I worked as a translator with Mitsubishi for 1 year (English/French/Arabic) and learnt a few sentences and Japanese words. Shakespear's quotation is one of the few I've learnt. Incidentally, I take it you are Japanese, correct?

Ahhh, that makes sense! There are technically different verbs for existence in Japanese, but 'living' is the way they usually conceive of it. Really just depends on how you view Hamlets monologue with Yorik I suppose? If he means "To live" or "To exist". And no, I am not Japanese, I just lived there for a while, did some travels through the country.

Could never understand why folk dislike spiders ? Natural fly preditors and they're quite harmless !

to tell you the truth Tom, they fascinate me when I watch them from afar. I hear there are dangerous ones and I can't tell the difference. I'm acat and dog person. oh and I like the harmless tortoise. got 3 of them. they love it when I give them a belly rub.
