Prologue

A Chapter by Shayne Plunk

From the light of Heaven, figures descended to Earth, invisible to the humans whose busy lives continued on the surface. Their wings shimmered, and their skin radiated perfection. In their arms, each of them held a small child, as indescribibly beautiful as themselves.

Across the world, which in the eyes of the angels was falling apart at the seams, they placed these flawless children. Each of them shed a tear, knowing that these angelic youths would go through many difficulties before their task was complete. It was painful to separate from these small angels, for they had been raised by the very angels who brought them now to this unraveled world.

However, the children simply smiled up at their elders, eyes full of purity and innocence. Though only recently brought into existence, they knew their responsibility, and each one was resolved in completing it. They had to do their best for their mentors, so that they could return to them and continue their lives as they were supposed to be lived.

The strange light that no mortal noticed began to fade from the sky, and the angels flapped their mighty, shimmering wings. From all over the world they ascended, returning to the clouds, leaving the children behind.

However, around them, the shadows of the night swirled and solidified. Gleaming eyes peered at them from afar, plotting and scheming. Tattered and bat-like wings seemed to stick out from the shadows, attached to malformed bodies. Cackling rose from some, and not a sound from others. Regardless of their laughter or silence, whispers spread among them.

“The angels on Earth,” they questioned. “Have they brought us a meal of their own kind?” Their curiosity was peaked. “We shall take them for ourselves,” some suggested. “Yes, of course,” replied the others. The spawn of Hell crept through the alleyways and buildings, merely watching for the moment. There had to be a catch.

And so, the sixty year miracle was to begin...
