Religious War

A poem highlighting the flag protests currently in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

It's December, a time to remember,
But this wasn't to be , on Belfast's Agenda.
A loan British Flag, once flown high at City Hall,
Removed from this building, it was the councils call.

A simple action, to some it would seem,
The council didn't consider, what this could mean.
The events of the next weeks, once a thing of the past,
But most of the people, hoping it won't last.

Violence and riots, hoax bombs and police lines,
Blocked roads and tailbacks, very tense times.
Amidst all this trouble, kids barely in their teens,
Fighting this religious war, no understanding it would seem.

Northern Ireland again, painted in a bad light,
I guess the peace treaty, never ended this fight.
A small group of people, intent on this trouble,
While innocent bystanders, try to walk over rubble.

A flag or denomination, we are all the same,
Does this give us reason, to injure or to mame?
Including those people, trying to keep peace and order,
Keeping everyone safe, throughout all this disorder.

Anger and tensions, at this decision and action,
Could all be addressed with a more civilised reaction.
No need for violence, disturbance and hoax calls,
So we can all have a peaceful future, once and for all.

Awesome poem ! It really highlights the issues and problems that these simple bits of coloured cloth create, the mentalities people form towards them, and the actions carried out in their names. Great work !
