Patria sees Flora's reason for fear

Patria said innocently that Montie must be into black culture. "Jake is really into black culture," Montie said as

the guy Jake wheeled himself in even though he wasn't moving and Flora was pushing. It's is the independence that defines you are pushing yourself even if someone else is pushing you. Patria's first impression was that Jake was very positive.

Montie looked at Jake like he felt that way too. Jake looked all dignified and listened like he hadn't heard before when Patria talked about the black dolls around the house and what characters they seemed to have.

Then Flora came and greeted Patria like land she wanted to lose herself exploring. Montie looked over curious.

When Patria sits on the couch, Flora brings up, "I have been worried. It is bad enough for him to see all the bad in blacks, but now he is starting to enjoy it. Brother of her soul he is her kin. Jake is so full of smart sounding ideas and Flora is seeing people listen. Struggling people see how other people are doing things that could be done better and not stopping to think what the flow of that person's life is - blacks are different. Collect the things blacks do and see them enjoying being with other blacks having fun that doesn't always involve helping others survive and they arent helping Jake. He doesn't really think on it. He just says blacks as far as he has personally seen are selfish - not that he wants to be racist - that is just what he's personally observed...and"

Jake looks like he is not really listening. He seems busy on surviving. He says overly casually, "Yeah, I find interesting things about blacks I know. I find it interesting going about my day to day life talking with them and seeing them around."

Dewey has a farm done the way he wants.

This is intriguing and somewhat confusing to my simple mind... The three chapters are a whirl of characters and impressions... like a stream of consciousness (aka James Joyce)... The interaction of the characters has a real edge to it, with the early reference to Jewish, lesbian, etc etc and now here the black dimension ... It promises excitement yet to be delivered.. making me want to read more... Jake seems to be somewhat detached... whereas Floro is absorbed by Patria...

I need you to explain it to me a little more...
