Dancing in the Rain

Dancing in the Rain

A Story by SilenceIsBliss
"

An angel of mine, Kalypso, taking a chance to dance.

"
Sitting on the bed she'd claimed as her own, her back leaned against the wall, she watched the light from her window slowly grow shorter and darker as it's beams splayed on the ground. Day turned to afternoon, noon to evening, evening to night. Spending her days in her room wasn't exactly the most exciting, but it gave her time to think, time to let others think. Pearly whites chewed on neutral pink lower lip as she hummed to herself. A gentle, slow song she used to hear human mothers sing to their children about mockingbirds and diamond rings. She'd always found it sweet that humans sang to their children. After all, angels didn't have parents like that. The thought brought a sad smile to her lips, before she shook her head and stood up, her form moving silently as if she were weightless. If Huttser happened to be sleeping, she didn't want to wake him. Skipping the last step in a silent leap, she padded across the main floor quietly on bare feet, her hands jammed into her hoodie's pockets as she crossed over towards the bar. Picking up a glass she set it on the bar before searching for a whiskey bottle. Taking it in her hand, she poured herself a glass, before replacing the bottle again. Lifting the glass of whiskey to her lips, the angel took a sip, allowing her tastebuds to get used to the flavor as she shuddered from the burn. Glancing about with those slate blue hues, she padded outside onto the porch, free hand snagging a chair to bring along with her. Settling the furniture outside, she settled in it, gaze peering out from where she sat to gaze towards the sky. A slight smile touched her lips as she tilted her chair back precariously upon the hind legs, one of her feet rocking the chair back and forth as she sipped at her chosen human poison. It had been awhile since she last slept. But she'd always loved to watch the heavens as the humans saw them, as little stars that could be connected to make pictures and memories. Clutching her glass to her chest, she closed her eyes and sighed softly, a smile curling the edges of her lips. It was fun, to pretend to be human. To watch the stars like any normal person might. Even angels had a sense of humanity. Running a hand up through her hair, the blonde sighed once again and relaxed out on the porch. After awhile, a chill swept through the area and she shivered, the clouds once more rolling in, threatening rain. Humans were always speaking about how fun it was to dance in the rain. How dramatic, how romantic. Kalypso didn't exactly understand, as it was very dangerous, but... maybe it would be fun. A silent prayer left the angel as she sipped at her glass, wanting the rain to pour from the heavens so she could experience something human for once. Something completely unreasonable and stupid, wasn't that how most humans acted? A soft laugh left her at the thought and she shook her head, standing up after a moment to return her glass to the counter, the last few sips of her whiskey settling in the bottom of the glass. Pulling her phone from her pocket, she answered a few messages from friends that lived far away, before setting the device on the counter next to the glass. If anyone walked in, they'd know she was there. But where? Sliding back outside, she sat on the porch again, waiting for the rain to spill forth. That prayer from earlier had been wishing for rain, to let her have her current wish. Soon, the rain would spill forth. At first, just sparse drops, and then slowly more and more until sheets of rain fell and splattered against the ground in a myriad of drops and puddles. Shrugging off her hoodie, she set it on her chair, before leaping off the porch and into the raining world. A shiver wracked her form from the chill of the water droplets pelting her flesh, but she grinned and laughed all the same, her form spinning around and enjoying life at night. The leaves of nearby trees rustled in silent song as animals far off called to the invisible moon as if to ask it to show itself to light their paths. It all became a gentle chorus within her mind as she danced around in the rain, laughing and simply enjoying her eternal life. It didn't take long for her to become a sopping, wet mess, strands of her hair sticking to her face as she grinned and gazed skywards, before closing those slate hues and shaking her head. How had she never enjoyed the simple concept of dancing in the rain? It made her wonder how many angels skipped out on human activities just because they thought they were unreasonable. It was fun, to dance in the dark with nothing but the rain to sing to you. Running both hands up through her soaked locks, she laughed loudly before walking her way back towards the tavern, leaning up against it's outer wall before sliding down into a seated position, smiling lazily as she watched the rain continue to fall and coat the ground in it's watery form. Tugging her hoodie down from the chair, she curled it around her shoulders, keeping herself warm as she brought her knees to her chest, arms folded atop her knees. Resting her chin in against her arms, she sighed happily and continued to watch, form drying at a snail's pace as she sat on the front porch of her friend's tavern. Once the clouds cleared and the sun began to rise, she stood from her perch on the porch, mostly dried, and wrung out her hair one last time. Padding back into the tavern, she huffed to herself and went into the kitchen to find something to eat. She didn't need it... but sometimes it gave her something to do. Besides, she could make breakfast for whenever Huttser made his appearance. Sliding into the kitchen, she got out a few pans, the toaster, and a plate. Settling the pans down, she flipped on the oven's burners before raiding the cabinets and the fridge. Tossing some bacon and sausage links onto the counter, she made up some pancake batter, before pouring it into the pan. Finding a spatula, she began making pancakes, which she'd settle on the plate after each one was a golden brown. Next, she made up some eggs, both sunny side up and scrambled, unsure of what he liked,. When the last couple pancakes were cooking, she threw some bacon and sausage links into the third pan and flipped that burner on, before moving to place some toast in the toaster. Soon enough, she had a plate of pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs, and toast sat out on the table. Once again raiding the fridge, she located some jam and butter before settling those on the counter as well. Waving a hand in front of her face from the heat of the kitchen, she turned off the burners and snapped her fingers, the dishes appearing in the sink to be dealt with later. Carrying the plate out, she set it on top of the bar, before returning to grab the jam and butter as well as some silverware, which she lay beside the plate. Grabbing a glass, she set it down before grabbing a bottle of scotch to set down, if he so wished. Grabbing her glass from earlier, she slid it into the sink and got to working on the dishes that needed to be done, since she'd messed them up. Of course, she could've had it done in less than a moment, but she liked the human feeling it gave her. Once done, she put everything away and found a scrap of paper to write on, which she wrote, "Bon appétit! - Kaly" in big cursive letters, before settling it next to the plate. A hand slid forth to grasp her phone from off the bar's top, before she slid it into her pocket again and she ventured back upstairs, humming a soft tune to herself, something about a mockingbird and a diamond ring, her form slipping back into her room to watch that place on her floor fill with sunlight and warmth, to watch the day pass by again.
