The Sad Demise of Marvin the Fly; A EulogyA Poem by Emma RuthA poem inspired by the tragic and untimely passing of a fruit fly named Marvin. The Sad Demise of Marvin the Fly; A Eulogy
It was indeed a tragic event, When all the day long he’d heroically spent, Gathering food for his family back home; No, he never even stopped to answer his phone…
But just as his work was almost done, Just as his last grain of sugar was just about won, The cup he was in was filled with hot tea, And he bitterly thought; why do these things only happen to me?
Marvin could swim, this much was true, Yet things got much harder as the temperature grew, And soon he had just about given up hope; How alone with 500 babies would his wife, Wendy, cope?
He began to grow weak as all oxygen left, He couldn’t help but think of his family, bereft, He closed his eyes in the caffine monsoon… But wait, on the horizon; a BIG plastic spoon!
Marvin swam with a renewed hope, And quickly took refuge on the white plastic boat, But alas the rescue was so shortly lived, As he slipped from the spoon and was again set adrift.
His rescuer, horrified, began to frantically stir, Yet only achieving a whirlpool of despair! Marvin was dragged to the depths of the cup, Until he could no longer decipher which way was up…
And thus Marvin was never again seen, And all that was left was a life there’d once been. It truly was a tragic demise, Of the kind that could only happen to flies. © 2012 Emma RuthReviews
