Look behind the wordsA Poem by EmmaI wrote this imagining I was saying it aloud, and I hope you can hear my voice in it.
Words have depth
when governed by belief. Seeking for expression, impression not whispered through gritted teeth. Maybe deeds made them listen, but people soon forget. Despite this incredible mind of ours we've lost humanity. Written off the threat. 140 million married before 18. It's abysmal, unethical and obscene. Think it doesn't apply? In every house we must iron, cook and clean; slave for our devout husbands. Exhausted, drained constantly. We are grateful we can work, but not the clause that we must fulfil the homely wife imagery. If we crack under the pressure. Have to lie in bed inert. Would you ask your 12-year-old daughter to iron your shirt? You wonder why we roll over in bed; turn off the light before you creep in. Well, I'm sorry, it's not me it's you. Learn to take it on the chin. So don't dismiss the movement; label the speakers as a flaunt. Because for me, for us, not having the power to speak is the taunt. When more die from rape and domestic abuse than cancer, car accidents, malaria and war; when the hashtag Me Too is engraved on our arms does it show you the magnitude, and there's only more. So see what's behind the women in black: A whole generation who want to fight back.
