As spotted in PC Gamer, some former Blizzard and Blizzard North employees hosted a panel at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. During that panel, the group of former D2R Items devs talked about the history of Diablo and their personal connections to Diablo, and also shared their stories about the making of the franchise. In the course of the discussion, leading designer for Diablo 3, Jay Wilson discussed the controversial auction house, discussing its beginnings and much more.

"When I was working at Blizzard," said Wilson, "the reason for doing the auction house in real money was security. This wasn't about money. We weren't expecting to earn that much money from it. But pretty quickly after its launch in 2012, Diablo 3's auction house was recognized as one its biggest flaws being constantly mocked and critiqued by the gaming community. However, getting rid of it wasn't easy and wasn't due to technical headaches.
