Too Much Pressure

Too Much Pressure

A Poem by Emily

A mushroom surrounded by darkness

A pumpkin shaded by its vines

Standing upright, I wish I could hide

Intricate necklace pulling down on me

Wishing I could abandon this party

People swarm around concessions table

Grabbing chips, ordering another drink

Ambition stuck inside me like glue

Keeping up with appearances

Easier said than done

Feeling like my inner voices are eavesdropping my thoughts

Gossiping about me

Why must the voices eavesdrop?

Lack of focus, must smile

Can’t afford to be uncommon

Must be common, must succeed

No matter the costs, no matter what

Longing to take off my necklace, dragging down on me

At first, I was going to criticize the transition between your lines as choppy, but I actually like them in that style - it gives a more realistic and personal feel because (being completely honest here) who thinks in complete, well-thought-out prose when they're feeling uneasy and out of place?

wow this was incredible to read. I loved how you wrote
"can't afford to be uncommon
must be common"
I also liked how you wrote about he voices eavesdropping. Another thing I liked was the way you mentioned the necklace dragging you down multiple times. It was in my opinion incredibly well written. Well done.
