Cavern

Cavern

A Poem by Emily Feret
"

We have to write poems for my class and this week were assigned to write an Elegy, which is a poem you write in remeberance of someone.

"

Cavern

Suddenly, I'm awake

Searching for you

frantically,

Until I am consoled

by a hand

On my shoulder

A reminding hand

A hand that's real

Like your was

When you would place

your hands on my face

With that look of

sheer determination and you would squeeze

And laugh and laugh

Again and Again

Why do I drown myself

in materials to try to arouse some kind of feeling

When you can find

such contentment in a funny face

When you could

I still look where I step to avoid your toys

Your trail of things

for me to pick up several times over

You, my tornado

Strong winds

Building, Creating,

Jumping,

Quick hugs on-the-run

Destroying everything

in its wake

Leaving me to pick up

the pieces

Leaving me to hide

your clothes

in a box

in your closet

that I go to when I'm

alone

The clothes that let

me believe you're still here

even for a moment

because they are

still clinging to you

But when I open my

eyes

I see the clothes

you'll never grow into and out of

again

And I am awake

When your heart beats

outside your chest

It is easily broken

Leaving you an empty

cavern

With phantom pains

you try to scratch

You left with eyes

wide open

Blue, and piercing

As if you had just

discovered something new

Blue and piercing

Like the water I

ripped you out of

Blue and piercing

Like the summer sky

that day

Blue, piercing,

Empty

You always had the

ability to take my breath away

But not that morning

Very good, dear poet. You have captured deep emotions and remembrances in this honest poem. I hope you will continue writing poems. I also hope you will let us know what grade you received for this assignment.

We don't really get grades, for how can you really "grade" art, I always found that idea of someone .. read more
