Ecosystem

Ecosystem

A Poem by MLE

To all the boys who have thought they were better than me.

No.

You are not better than me. I may not be a bleach blonde, tanned goddess who moulds the world around her as she strides elegantly through the streets.

In fact, I am average height, overweight and pretty plain, if I’m honest.

But I have a laugh as loud as the hills when they come alive with the buzz of wildlife in the evening dusk.

I am a pink sky, making shepherds smile as they breathe out the day and embrace a new one.

I am every star that twinkles enough to catch your eye, a natural phenomenon that glows for centuries. I have burnt out long before you see me, sir.

Not because I am not good enough for you, but because you are not good enough for me.

You do not stop to look upon the skies, or stop to smell the blossoming roses that I leave behind me with my words and thoughts.

You are not the type of person to marvel at the way the crisp, dewy grass drifts softly from side to side when I whisper your name.

No, you are not that person, and you will not get to enjoy the sweet aromas I emit when I ask you, “Why do you think we exist?”

I am an encyclopedia of useless facts that make you smile.

I am a stage full of puns and song and laughter and dance. I don’t care if you are watching.

Eventually, someone will be.

The one that cannot take his eyes off of me, or mine off of his.

When he is not a spectator, he gets up and dances with me. He laughs as loud as I do and stops to revel in my laughter. A laughter he has created. He will stop and lie down on the crisp, dewey grass and breathe me in, while blinking at the starry sky.

He will be perfect, but I will not stop being my own ecosystem just because he has arrived.

I will continue to live dependent of another life source because I do not need boys opinions to validate myself. I love me, I love who I am and all the colours that radiate from my soul.

Sunbeams come out my eyes and whether other people see them or not, I do not care. I do not need to prove my worth for I exist solely for myself and that is ENOUGH.

So to all the boys that have ever thought they were better than me, to save their pride, Take your venomous worlds and looks and get lost.

My mind is too beautiful for you to take up any space and my world moves too quickly for you to stay aboard.
