sunburnt

sunburnt

A Poem by Emily

maybe I should have gotten you
a card with a 20 dollar bill, wrote
you
a poem declaring my love,
hid a tube of lipstick by the bed
cherry red lips at 6 a.m.,
slowed down my walk, stuck by
your side

come on, come on
catch up, I said

I'm wearing my polka dot dress
with no shoes
barefoot
callused soles

you've got ahold of my shadow
pulling me back
and like a rubber band I
snap!
so you want to play with fire, eh?

snap, snap, snap
hair tangled in a knot
styled by the wind
fanning the fire
higher, higher, higher

I blew you a kiss from across
The street
Turned and walked away

As you turned to ashes

instead
