catching up

catching up

A Poem by Emily B

there’s something about the way

I can’t quite match my stride to yours,

it’s not that my legs aren’t long enough,

it’s not that I don’t want our steps to match

I reach and reach

but I can never quite

keep up

do you reckon my Robert Frost

was ever a match for your Plato?

or my Dickinson

to your Cicero?

the stars shine in your smile

and if I find myself a little behind

sometimes

I hope you’ll take me by the hand

and pull me close.

This gives a sense of having someone on a very high pedestal, and loving that person so much that you feel too blessed to have them, as if they'll disappear at any moment. Lovely. I like the beginning lines, and the ending ones- they showcase that feeling of not quite believing that you could be so lucky, without saying it.

One of your best. Are poets better thinkers than philosophers? Don't know too many poets who could cause a war with a few words.
Best to be a poet a little step behind but knowing just as much.

This is quite a real piece, tender and hopeful... A great title for the piece. Wonderfully done...

What does it matter if you you are a step behind, or your strides not quite in sync...the important fact is that you are on your way, willing to go the distance, trying to keep up...and you will get there, sooner or later, each step brings you closer to the goal...just keep walking!
A wonderful, thought provoking write...I love it!

this piece became personal for me - reminding me of times when I was a little girl trying to stand up in my daddy's military boots...
I love the fact that your poems have that capability...

The first thing that I noticed about this poem was it's sincerity, and from then on I was captivated^ It's a little difficult to decide what you allude to here, whether it's a drifting relationship or someone you admire or look up to, perhaps even another writer on here.

But I guess it's the same way all of us feel sometimes. Many of us if not all of us are followers of someone, or something, imitators in some way shape or form.

Whether as artists, or people in general, we mimick the legends or those on the path to greatess, the ones we are just within reach of,we should never lose sight of our own essence, because nothing could take that away from us, even if that ''great one'' is already long gone by the time we figure it out. ^

Enjoyed it^

Robert Frost or Plato, Dickinson or Cicero...all different personalities, with one same goal...trying to express their deepest thoughts of the mind, as each of us do.
Small steps are more rewarding, than leaps and bounds.
The tenderness of your words are magnificent, especially those in the last stanza.
This is one of your pieces that I say to myself, "I could fall in love with this person"
Just beautiful Emily.

I know the feeling, but I think I agree with Jibey on this one. People are, and should be different. (Besides, if you walk too fast, you could miss out on something beautiful ;))

Beautiful... fantastic idea of the one who looks after you when you fall behind, something we all desire in life. Excellently written - you really are a stunning writer.
