Learning

A Poem by Emily B
"

and I still have so many things to learn

"

Your words flow

out of their banks

like fresh rivulets

that have never

been downstream.

My mind grabs the big ideas,

turns them over

and washes them in the cool,

clear water

at the edge of the river.

Little toy boats play

in the quiet wave

before being swept away

knowing loss

but not a name for it.

I know more than

I think I do, sometimes

sitting quietly at the river,

letting my thoughts

collect gently into

coherent, cohesive ideas.

Softly flowing words

carry me beyond myself,

to the far reaches

of everything

I've never known.

I walk away with

a shiny pebble

washed smooth by time

found reflected back

in the clear pool.

This is an old fav of mine. It is a joy to read again. I love the idea of taking someone's else's ideas and washing them in the cool, clear water at the edge of your mind. There is such a slow, dreamy feeling to this. I could could just drift down stream on your words. Lovely.

I love the whole metaphor scene you have used here, the picture pops out at us so clearly. The wisdom we take from others words and ideas is astounding.....the fact that we can take these ideas and words and fit them into our own inner self is amazing. The words and ideas have been around for centuries and now we have found new ways to use them, that is how I read this piece.

I've had this dreamn..but it was primordial ooze, rather than a still stream...
glad to see the peace you've found here.

It is with time that the clear waters actually manage to wash away the sediment that we collect over our own periods of time. We can see clearly through the water, but that does not mean we can see what we need to see. But there, in the reflection of a pebble worn with time - that which we could see is finally seen. For in looking in the water, we looked outside while it was the reflection in the pebble that instructs us to look within....

Don't we all wish we could be washed smooth by time:). I love the gentle
ebbing of this poem. Reminiscing of childhood, of dreams that get carried away.

Nice work....AD

It's really perfectly written. It carries with it just a relaxing quality that soothes you as you read. As I read this I found myself thinking back to the times my parents took me hiking or to the mountains, and reminded me where my love of nature came from. I like this.
