Elusive as the Dream

Elusive as the Dream

A Poem by Emily B
"

for Dostani and The Broken Poet

"
Am I real, today?

Hovering somewhere between
the darkness and the light
like a spirit
or a dream

I feel the vibrations
of a thousand
heart beats.

You felt it, too.

and if the heavens tremble,
locked in an invisible struggle
So must we.

The rain was real
but it's gone
now.

And knowing
that you and I and he
all felt the same void

last night in our dreams

suddenly
makes it all seem
less lonely.

Author's Note

Emily B
Three people from across the country had the same dream one dark and rainy night. It affected them so deeply that come morning they were still shaken and wondering. It was the same dream except for each person the big, scary monster was drawn from each person's deepest self doubt. The rain and the doubt didn't begin to lift until the words came.

When I read this, my first thoughts were of the French expression l'heure bleue (Blue hour) - which refers to the hour experienced between the hours of daylight and darkness. This period of the day is considered special, because of the quality of the light.

In the case of your beautifully poetic composition, I found this was because of the quality of the write, which made it special.

in this I see you in my mindseye as a person caught inbetween worlds...a seemingly familiar place for you and wondering in ernest if it is the reality or the dream scape you speak from?

I love that the imagery is just beyond the shadows and like you have created, different for all. Makes for a great suspenseful, thought provoking piece. Excellent!

It is amazing how connected we truly are to other human beings in this world. So many of us feel alone, but in reality, we are all touched by the same things, effected by the same things, and we all feel the same things. For being so disconnected in our perceptions of life, we are intricately interconnected in the conciousness below the surface.

This was a fabulously poignant write...the wording was amazing and the flow wonderful. Well written.

My review skills suck these days so I'll just say this is a profound poem. Your author's note puts it into perspective and really makes you think. The whole concept is intriguing to me. Excellent work.

Scientists think that much of our intuitive ability resides in the hippocampus portion of the brain. This region is more active in women than men, with one caveat: during the 2 weeks preceeding ovulation, the region is roughly equivalent with men's brains. During the 2 weeks after, activity is heightened, and remains at a heightened state after menopause. Interestingly enough, the region is also more active for almost everyone (who keeps normal daylight hours) at 3 key time periods during the day: 10-12 pm at night, 2-4 am, and upon waking. All three are associated with body temperature shifts and sudden changes in consciousness as well. The 2-4 am slot is famously known as the witching hour because of the high lieklihood that some intuitive message is going to come through your dreams at that time period.

Connections come in various ways. Your poem catches one of those eerie moments when life encloses us in a common experience, like being in bed with the world and sharing the same blanket.

i'll pick them up later, after some tea and a much needed cigarette

Well done, Emily, writing, finding and timing the posting of this
