Words

A Poem by Emily B

Before I had words of my own

I found myself in poems

Or maybe I was lost.

I drank them up

Swimming through meter and rhyme.

Internalizing lines and verse until they became part

of the very air I breathed.

And when, I had no book,

I could pull an old favorite from my memory

to soothe an ache

As randomly as picking a tear from a cloud.

On quieter days I turn to my old friends.

They comfort me

Each in their turn.

Each eternally predictable

As I reach for words.

And I know that lost or found

Emotions are easier in poems than in people.

Yes, you are right. Expessing emotions is easier in a poem than face to face too. Face to face, we get caught up in our emotions and the words get stuck in our throats or on the tips of our tongues.
Very nice poem. Very good expression of your emotion. lol

Most definitely. A beautiful, succinct write about how these words affect us. Truly written with the artists quill. Thank you for sharing.

Oh yes yes! This is why a lot of love poems and heart broken poems are written, it is easier to say it in poetry...lovely write, Emily :)

Exquisite....in the first stanza, the speaker is saying that she expressed, and gained an understanding of, her own emotions by reading poetry; as the poem progresses, we watch as she learns, finds her voice, and writes poetry to express her emotions, but also talks with good friends....then the poem comes full circle as the speaker realizes that poetry is still the best means of expression for her.

Excellent piece, and that last line is what great quotes are made of :-)

Well, this is certainly a nice and simple poem. ^^ I really like it! The last line is my eternal favorite because you're really not lying about the whole emotions thing. :) This is a really nice poem.

Lots of interesting imagery here Emily. A random tear from a cloud I particularly like. The overall feel is powerful and well written.

"And when, I had no book,
I could pull an old favorite from my memory
to soothe an ache
As randomly as picking a tear from a cloud." - beautifully expressed; I bet a lot of people can relate their own childhoods/young adulthoods to this. Passages from books read are always filtering through the mind-haze as a comfort for me..

This is a really good piece; that last line is more direct and simplistic than the rest, which makes it quite a powerful ending because the statement lingers, tangible in its truth.

"And when, I had no book," - comma after "when" might be out of place, not sure.

Thanks for sharing this with us.
