Wonder

Wonder

A Poem by Emily B

Don't tell me how it works, sir,
I like to watch
And be amazed at the display.
The inner workings, wiring, switches,
all, are unnecessary details.
Miracles deflated.
Don't explain the rainbow,
or sunshine,
or brain waves.
Child-like
in my comprehension
I want to smile
and clap my hands
at the wonder
of it all.

I remember this one. It brings to mind several memories and a cpl not so good ones. At Children's Hospital in St. Louis they have this magnificent huge display in a glass box that is taller than me and and probably 10 or 15 ft long. It sits right in the center of the entry foyer. It is hard to describe but it is all of these rails and chains and buckets and silver balls constantly moving up and down and across... you get the picture. People just stand there watching in awe, it is magnificent and your poem has always reminded me of that. I love this piece...

This poem was well written, and it flowed very easily for a reader. It seemed like a child was stubbornly refusing the explanations of an elder because she wanted to make up her own story...her own sense of it all. Thank you for sharing your writing on the Cafe, and I look forward to reading more in the future.

Blissful, gentle, and wonderfully innocent. Beautifully done.

Emily, i really like this .. it is true , knowing how this and that works and what this or that does takes some of the 'magic' from it and so good to stay in touch with our inner child.
A very wonderful poem .

Hey this is amazing. How people dissect and give clinical explanations and take away the magic.I love the undefined.

I like the way you put that one together. I am a child care provider by profession and you captured it!

Oh a lovely glimpse into what it once was like.
That is the land of lost content.

Very, very good selection Emily.

I like it a lot. Especially the unnamed "Whiz-bang" that we all must envision in our own ways.

Marvelous.

I'm becoming prouder and prouder of the entries in "The Kitchen Sink" contest.
