China DollA Poem by EmilyThis was originally for a school project that we had to do for the book Walden. The girl. The one in the back of the room, With raven hair and ice blue eyes, With skin like alabaster, they say. The china doll girl, they say. The girl with a long fuse, And a hot spark. A fiery feminist, Not quite bleeding heart liberal, they say. The artist's soul, they say. The girl with her nose in a book, A camera by her side, And a song in her heart. Well, this is what they say.
But there are things they do not say. Things they do not know. Like the eight years of back and forth Between houses and parents and families. The year of darkness, That has left shadows lingering. They do not know the silver slice of whispered words, Or the crimson marks they leave.
They also do not know the strength of the china doll girl's faith. No, not in God. But her belief in the good of people. Belief in the power of self. Belief in believing. (She is the most optimistic cynic you'll ever meet)
They say many things, But does it matter what they say? © 2010 Emily |
