Prologue

"

Introduction to the new world.

"
No one knows when it happened. No one is old enough to remember. Sure, the stories have been told to generation after generation but it has continued to change with each telling. The number of people who still know the stories are decreasing though. My family is one of the very few families that have continued telling the stories but my family also have another secret, but I'll get to that later.
For now I'll just tell the version of the legend that was told to me. Many, many years ago, no one is quite sure when, the world was a very different place. They say that the sky was a dazzling light blue during the day and then at night it became a romantic navy with sprinkles of little stars that twinkled like diamonds, that the grass was a lush  green, that people could express themselves with colours, that people could have different coloured eyes, that people could wear different coloured clothes but all of that has changed. No one is quite sure how it happened or how long it took but nowadays, in the year 3013, the sky has lost its romance  and its twinkling lights and is a dreary grey, the grass has become lifelessly grey, everyone wears government issued white clothing and they all have the same amber eyes. Most people don't even know what colours or paint are.  In fact, if you are one of the few people that know about colours then you are arrested.
Just taken from your home or from your job or from your school. You and all of your family are arrested and when you come back you are a zombie version of your old self. The light is taken from your life and you simply crawl through life wishing you could remember what made you want to live before you were apprehended. That is the unknown law set by the government in a time that no one can remember. Why does the government take away your memory of colours, you ask? Well that's pretty simple.  Because of the rebels.
The rebels  are a pretty peaceful assortment of artists. They are the children that were told the legend of the old world. They, literally, dreamed of colours and joined the crusade to bring colour back to the world.  They sneak out of their homes, if they are lucky enough to still be at home with their family, and they paint. That's it. They paint the white walls of the most commonly used buildings (supermarkets, banks, and if they are particularly fearless government buildings) to show the people all the colours that they are missing. Now the rebels are not the violent type, they do not go out looking to fight with police officers, they just want to paint, but they do carry small weapons on their person at all times, because the police are more than happy to be very violent. The rebels carry small knives and any other small weapon they can hide or make for themselves.
Most of the rebels and their families have been force out of their homes because of the dreams they have. When the government finds out that you dream of colours then they will be after you and your family and if captured your memories will be erased. Your only hope is to escape to the rebel's secret village that is hidden under the city. It's nothing fancy or anything just a large and open cavern that was discovered and kept secret by the original rebels decades ago, because of the cavern the rebels also have secret tunnels that start in the cavern and lead to areas all over the city, that is how the government cannot find them. They don't know of the cavern and therefore don't know about the tunnels the rebels escape to when being hunted by the police.  But enough about our history, let's get back to the present.

I really, really like the dystopia you are creating with this story, but I have a few questions for you -- I think, if you spend time answering these questions, they will help you make this a lot better. How old is the speaker (and what sort of age-appropriate language/sentence syntax do they use to speak)? Why is your speaker sharing this story? How does your speaker know all of these things about what happens to people who are arrested? If your speaker knows about the colours, why hasn't your speaker's family been arrested? Good luck, and cheers.
