There Is a Woman Who Lives in a Pipe

By Elton Camp

This poem won’t be another humor write

For it describes a true but miserable sight

It is in India that this woman does exist

Normal comforts of life, she has missed

Because grinding poverty is her daily lot

And for a home, a pipe is all she’s got

Although she survives in fear & desperation

She is making the best she can of the situation

From her home, she can look out and see

Magnificent homes where the rich will be

Who will act to rescue her from her plight

Remove from the scene this awful blight

If, to human dignity, continues such insult

Who can know what will be the final result

(Sadly, this is all-too-true.  To see the woman sitting outside her

humble home, go here:  http://www.scribd.com/doc/81138265/There-is-a-Woman-Who-Lives-in-a-Pipe )

What a sad sight. Some people have so much money they literally don't know what to do with it, while some live in such abject poverty, they not only don't know where their next meal is coming from, they don't know if they'll be alive to eat it.

This poem really has an emotional edge to it. My paternal grandparents were missionaries and spent decades in India. My own dad spent the first six years of his life there, and he can attest to the subhuman living conditions that exist there. You're absolutely right- nobody should have to live like that.
