Religion Rides the Political Wild Beast

Revelation Chapter 18

Any candidate who doesn’t support the church

Should expect to find himself left in the lurch

Sectarianism has been used to having its way

And wishes it was still like “back in the day”

When the church to the rulers could dictate

And threaten them with a most horrible fate

When those not orthodox in religious view

The state would summarily execute too

Regular payments to the state church as well

Were collected under threat of fire in hell

The easiest way to win converts of course

Was to threaten the use of deadly force

“Heretic, you mustn’t make any mistake.

Comply or face a burning death at the stake.”

Rulers thought themselves anointed of God

Dissenters could expect to feel the iron rod

Oh how the church wishes it was still that way

So it could force all people its tenets to obey

Against Babylon the Great the state will turn

The political wild beast will devour and burn

Oh I don't think all churches are that way.
