Should Religion be in the Public Schools?

By Elton Camp

It is hard to imagine making a bigger mistake

Than putting religion into schools to undertake

“In God we trust,” such folks piously will howl

Those words to many Americans bring a scowl

Of just which particular God does that speak?

Of an attempt to impose religion that does reek

Should a Jewish child in school have to hear

That he must accept Jesus or hell he must fear?

Then, how about the youngster who’s an atheist

If in the public schools belief in God they insist?

The Muslim child who believes that Allah is God

Must find Christianity being forced to be odd

Should the Mormon child who trinity does deny

Be forced to hear what he believes to be a lie?

To have one’s children with religion indoctrinated

Is the main reason that private schools were created

For the public schools, with tax money we pay

They’re not for church zealots to have their say

The U.S. Supreme Court has wisely decreed

To keep religion out of schools there’s a need
