The Long Staircase

By Elton Camp

When I was a small child, stairs I did fear

If possible, to them I wouldn’t come near

In my young mind they generated such care

That they were often in my worst nightmare

When into my dreams they came around

I was apprehensive that I’d tumble down

Whenever an adult would kindly carry me

I was as grateful as a little kid could be

But when I later became mature enough

I no longer found them scary or tough

I would usually take steps two at a time

They were no problem for me to climb

The man has become a child once more

And staircases I fear much as I did before

But to the railing I hold on very tight

And try not to let folks see my fright
