![]() Some Advice to ImmigrantsA Poem by Elton Camp![]() The situation isn't fair, but the advice IS sound.![]() Some Advice to Immigrants By Elton Camp In general, advice that hasn’t been requested Will be ignored or perhaps even hotly contested If to a minority group some person does belong All of them are smeared if he does any wrong Is this fair or how people actually should feel? Why, of course it is not, but yet it is all-too-real When it is a “white” who we see acting unwise To the whole community nobody will generalize But if it is a Mexican who commits some crime, Folks say, “They will do like that every time.” Most immigrants here are a decent, honest type But more than a few give us valid reason to gripe In our town, there are some of them we see Who seem to expect to get everything free Wake up folks, you have to pay for what you get So don’t be a bum and make others have a fit Income tax is another thing that we have to pay There’s resentment of any who avoid it some way And this isn’t at all intended to be cruel or mean It’s important to keep your yard and house clean If Jose allows his grass to grow up waist high “Filthy Mexican” folks say when they drive by If I do that, they will say, “That man’s a lazy lout,” But not that “That’s what whites are all about.” Immigrants with their new home have to comply If not, they must expect to be greeted with a sigh So to your conduct always give very close attention Give to others only good things they can mention © 2011 Elton Camp |
