The Empty Pews

By Elton Camp

This will be seen more and more as time goes on

People no longer are there and they will stay gone

Churches now have begun to reap what’s been sown

Their greed & unreasonable doctrine are well known

Their greatest goal is to collect from folks the tithe

So that the preacher and his family all will thrive

And so their church has the tallest steeple in town

At which the poor people’s church will then frown

Church has become the spot to display one’s clothes

And as to big hypocrites, they have plenty of those

Churches on politics seem to greatly love to dote

And to tell their members just how they should vote

The preacher gives his opinion about such as all that

Whether the flock should be Republican or Democrat

To their minds, he either forgets or refuses to bring

The fact from Scripture that Jesus refused to be king

His followers thought he’d assume Israel’s throne

But Jesus knew it was to heaven he would be gone

Many churches rightly their doors have had to shut

As to nearly nothing their attendance has been cut

I liked this. It really gives the reader the idea that any churches today have lost whats really important. They flatter themselves with for example the tallest steeple. when they should be concerned with what Jesus called us to do and that was to bring others to him and use the church as a worship building. Many churches forget that they dont need all of that flashy stuff because, if they think and remember, the first church was nothing more than a group of people gathered together at a member's house.
With that said, Great job!!
