Out at Night Too Late

By Elton Camp

I sure was foolish to have stayed out so late

Driving alone at night is something I so hate

But it was well after midnight before I knew

So to my car in the dark parking lot I flew

I was sort of relieved to see it was still there

Because to lock the doors I hadn’t taken care

It was worse when I reached the edge of town

Because I could see only darkness all around

A monster more horrible than I could dream

Might lurk just beyond my headlight beam

If my car should break down, I’d be in a mess

And a feeling of great unease I had to confess

Then from the back seat came a rustling sound

I was much too frightened to turn & look around

In the rear view mirror, I saw an evil face arise

A knife in his hand and insane anger in his eyes

And then I heard a voice very close to my ear

“Get up, son, you’ll be late to school, I fear.”

What a relief to find it nothing but a nightmare

I’d sure hate to have been on the road out there
