What Will His Future Be?

By Elton Camp

In a country town where I’d never been before,

I saw a young boy coming out of the seed store

Faded bib overalls he wore just as did his dad

I wondered if his life would be happy or sad

By his dress, his prospects might look quite dim

But who can know the future of a boy like him?

His eyes may show a determined, burning desire

To achieve more than just be a farm hand for hire

Do we see a coming captain of industry here,

Whom even the nation’s rulers will come to fear?

Or perhaps there will eventually come the date

When he will preside as the governor of his state

It could be, though, that a life of crime lies before

The boy may become a petty thief and nothing more

Or he may grow into a man of often drunken spree

Or he could turn to drugs to set all of his pains free

It is much mistaken to say that it’s entirely up to him

Matters beyond his control may make his life so grim

Or there may come someone to help this lad one day

A friend and mentor who’ll show him the right way
