The Disastrous Dinner PartyA Poem by Elton CampThe worst day of my life. The Disastrous Dinner Party By Elton Camp While we aren’t ones who like to entertain, By hosting a big dinner, I had much to gain It sure was the largest group that I never saw Boss, clients, relatives & the mother-in-law The boss said to be promoted do all you can Make our clients know you’re a family man Your stock will soon rise in our firm’s eyes If you prove you are friendly and socialize When the main dish for dinner was complete Wife gave an advance taste to our dog, Pete When he finished eating, she put him outside From guests, it might be wise a dog to hide After all was ready, then we sat down to eat Everybody declared that meal was a treat While our guests were visiting in the den, I went out with scraps to feed Pete again He was shaking and laying on his side And while I watched, the old dog died He had eaten earlier flashed into my head That surely must be the reason he’s dead Something very toxic in the food must be And everybody ate it, Oh, goodness me To conceal such a danger I didn’t dare try What could I say if anyone came to die? Ambulances soon came to fill the drive Quick to stomach pumps to keep alive Said the boss being rolled out the door “Don’t you dare come to work anymore.” The next day when we were all alone We go an unexpected call on our phone “I want to tell that your dog I hit last night. He crawled behind your house out of sight.” “I am worried that he was hurt very bad. And if he came to die, it makes me so sad.” And that was how the disaster came about That the food was okay, I don’t have a doubt © 2010 Elton Camp |
